Transferring DVD to Camcorder tape

Hello everyone - I've been lurking on the board for a few years now but have decided to post as I need some help.

I have a copy of a football match on a DVD. I need to transfer the match from the DVD on to a Camcorder tape, so that I can then transfer the match from the tape to my laptop. I will be using performance analysis software to analyse the match and have transfered games directly from the camcorder on to the laptop without any problems. However, the software does not allow me to simply put the DVD into the laptop and use it from there.

I have sought advice from an IT technician who told me I would need to play the DVD and attach a camcorder to the DVD player to capture the output - I tried this but it didn't work, though I'm not sure if I had the right leads.

Has anyone tried this before? Is there hardware I can buy which can do this for me?

All help much appreciated.

Would it not be a matter of finding what type of input the performance analysis uses to recognise the video... e.g. wmv/avi/mpeg4. Once you have found that out just transfer the DVD to your laptop and get some kind of conversion software to convert the dvd into whatever video output you need.

You should be able to rip the DVD to and mpeg file which your analysis software should be able to work with.  I use cyberlink power director (£40) to do this.  I'm sure there are other free applications which can do this, I just don't know of any.

I have just done a bit more research into this. The software can use digital video in either AVI or MPEG format.  Magic DVD ripper, cyberlink power director and AVS Video Tools are a few I have come across, so I'll have a look at them over the weekend and maybe download their demo versions to see if I can get it sorted.

Thanks for your help.

What about divx.  Download the package free at www.divx.com and get the divx converter.

Copy your original dvd. Put your copied version onto the divx converter.

Some of the conversion packages can have a slight lag in sound quality

DVD video streams are essentially Mpeg, so just rip the DVD onto your laptop then rename the 'vob' files as 'mpg'. DVD Decrypter should do the job: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

You be able to view them then using a decent media player such as VLC Player,

Donaghs advice is the practical one

This is a much less practical way to go about it,
and even the answer to this Q could be a long one.
Have you a dvd player or DVD player/recorder
If it is a recorder
Probably you are not connecting the leads from the DVD camera to  outputs from the DVD player.
Probably you have connected the leads to the DVD player input - on the front panel?

Check your DVD player /recorder  Manual for finding out which socket is an output

If I understand you correctly I have done something similar by using a scart input/output switch (like this one here http://www.consolesandgadgets.co.uk/catalog/scart-avsvideo-inputoutput-converter-p-202.html), connected the camera to the tv as normal,  with switch turned to output, then play the dvd and record on the camera.

Not saying it's the best way but worked for me!

Main street - I have a DVD player, not a recorder. The lead I have is the one with the red, white and yellow ends. I put them into the back of the DVDplayer and attached the other end to the camcorder - in the 'D STILL PICTURE' port and the 'AV OUT PHONES' port. Tried both, but no luck. There is an 'S-VIDEO OUT' port on the camcorder, but I don't have the lead for it.

I think my best option is to download software to rip the DVD, so i'll try that.

Thanks again everyone for all the advice.

Best is to rip.
Those ports on the Camera are  out ports, you can only send images and sound out.
They will not receive from the dvd player.

Firstly you need to download Magic DVD Ripper. I have version 5.2 so il be able to tell you how to crack it without paying. Just download the trail version from uTorrent.

Every commercial DVD has 3 file types on the disk. BUP's, IFO's and VOB's. The IFO file contains information about the VOB such as pointers etc. However the VOB is the big daddy that you want.

Once you download Magic DVD Ripper put in the dvd and select it as the input source in Magic DVD Ripper. Then choose your output settings. You should make the output a .AVI and select a frame rate of 25fps for decent quality. Then select were you want to save the file to and what you want to call it and click Convert!

And there ya go jab done. It will take about 20 mins to convert. Your safer converting it to an .AVI first because its the best file type for editing the clip further in things like abode premiere.

He must be a right cowboy of a technician because theres no need for leads or attaching anything.  I do this type of thing all the time for my Uni Course so let me know if you have any problems
