The day the Irish turned it back on its fellow man...

Still do in most parts
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

If the Brits had dumped South Down, South Armagh, large parts of Fermanagh and Tyrone and Derry City they and the Unionists would have got themselves a grand little Statelet for all time.
Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

Yep.

Or had they stuck with the plan, then Ireland, through a referendum at some point in history (many years ago) would have been united, but nah, hell, I'm all right jack kicked in  ;)

Quote from: seafoid on December 03, 2025, 10:36:46 AMOn this day in 1925 the Brits and the Free State agreed the borders of OWC and the Border Commission was ignored. Practically the Border separated users of Boxing Day from users of Stephen's Day.

They also removed the need for the Freestate to contribute to UK debt. So the net outcome of the deal was that the British bought South Armagh for about £50,000 a head in modern monetary values.
I think this financial write-off by the Brits was a huge factor.

What plan was that?
The 6/26 partition was in the pipeline from 1915 on.

The Anglo Irish Agreement changed the game. The Irish Government got involved to look after nationalist interests and protect them from Unionist overreach. The GFA involved the Dublin Government further. The governance of the North changed. OWC is a failing state. Despite a century of partition and the BBC,  nationalists are still Irish. It certainly helped.
But the boundary commission was banjaxed by the Civil War. The anti-treaty crowd trying capture Kerry delayed the start of its operation and ensured that the border became established.

All ifs and buts now, but ...

If the Brits had  pissed off without holding on to the  6 counties, what would the outcome have been?

Loyalists  were threatening violence.  Technically, they would have been mad at the Brits  for abandoning them , so would they have taken their violent campaign to  Britain?
