most will know that I have been on about the US starting to invest in the north and then along the border regions as a sop for jobs at the outset of the British Gov engineering their retreat from the six counties.
This is another example of it folks.
There will be more in advance of the population/voting/majority swing
people's sense of outrage will be dulled by the jobs they will get from the private sector as the public sector work is transferred back over to England!

Hate to say I told you so (jeez starting to sound like Tony!! :o)

This investment came due to NYSE buying Wombat, based in Belfast.
They have been  expanding here since that point-  this is the culmination of that expansion.
Its very easy to make your claims LB, but i dont see it backed up by what actually happened. Good performance by the established belfast team, cheaper costs etc are more important to the NYSE.

yep
and it continues...
backed up by the efforts of first and second ministers etc and I'd say at the behest of the British Gov !

Just expect to see more of it.
personally, dont know if its jealousy of disbelief that they'd give jobs to the likes of those in belfast - I think theyd be much better served based in or around Dublin !

Better , more  and more experienced candidates down here !....and remember I have been making these claims for a good few years now !!
Prior to wombat takeover! In all honesty - people woul dhave to say even then - 'why belfast' !!

..........

nifan

But your claims where nothing to do with the takeover of wombat - it was not bought due to any such political machinations, and it has not expanded based on this either.

Not sure it would be better served around dublin.
Many of the jobs are going to be fleshing out the teams in belfast - where all the expertise on most of the software products is. Also the cost of operating in dublin would be significantly higher.

As "for even then "why belfast"" - thats where wombat was based.

no I didnt pinpoint wombat - but I did and have been saying that there was going to be a plethora of us and then british  plus EU investment.

wombat was (is) in belfast, but the NYSE could very easily have shipped it to the bigger pool of expertise that is Greater Dublin area.
such work remaining or being set up in belfast will start to raise the profile and skills pool of 'greater' belfast - which is , as I have said - the motivation behind all this.

if it wasnt, whythen stay in belfast. After aquiring wombat, it would be far more cost effective to move the entire operation east !
Eastern europe or india !
But its staying in belfast.
Doesnt prove my case completely, but this is the start of it.

As long as the south gets its share of this , I'll be happy enough.
Border regions like Derry/Donegal, Cavan/Fermanagh, Monaghan/Armagh - but forget about that cesspit of dud-awlk ! :D

Quoteif it wasnt, whythen stay in belfast.

Because the skills of wombat are based predominately in Belfast, and moving these people to Dublin, or to the east is not going to happen.

Just bacause you predicted american investment in NI (not much of a prediction, plenty of investment from american companies has occured in the past) doesnt mean that the next american company who arrives proves your hypothesis.

Im fairly certain you dont really know much about this deal and are just guessing.

oh good Jeezuz !!  ::)
if thats your grasp on business then theres no point in anything more.

yep, only belfast has the 'talent' that can perform this work.

a wee hint for you - developers are ten a penny in every country of the world - not just in india !!

Quotea wee hint for you - developers are ten a penny in every country of the world - not just in india !!

There are developers all over who can do the work, but the core knowledge is based in belfast.
You cant expect a new team without training to launch in to development on established software without those with core knowledge - it is difficult enough to expand development teams with new talent without slowing down experienced developers in the training process.

Do you know what software wombat provides, or anything about its development teams?

yes, worked in some of the leading software houses in Dublin and its pretty easy to transfer knowledge, far easier than people like to pretend it is.
Thats why a lot of stuff has been migrated to bangalore and hyperbad etc etc

there would be a slight dip in productivity while transferring 'knowledge' but this is made up for very quickly by any team that gets the development work.
programmers have been trying to kid companies for years. A lot of my good friends who were/are developers would admit this (and have done so).

the work in belfast can easily be taken back to the us or shipped to the east. Economically it woul dbe more viable to do so - thus asking the question why it is based in belfast still. Ergo the reason for keeping it there is more political than economical !!
Again if you dont understand how the big bad world of commericalism, economics or ordinary business is conducted, I'd say then you most def have to be a programmer !!

ten a penny is no fabrication of the truth!

Yes I am a developer.

I find it interesting that you are being condescending to me on the topic of the NYSE investment when it is fairly obvious youve no actual knowledge of whats been going on in the last couple of years there. You are making a lot of assumptions of the reasons why the investment was made without any facts to back it up.

FFS !!

as I said before you just dont know how the business world works!!
any knowledge on wombat etc is not remotely required as its software development.
That is the modern day equivalent of building a house. Many different ways/styles/techniques and materials can be used to do it and there are myriads of people throughout the world who can do it equally as well. Are Irish plasterers better than polish ones? - err no !!

I have outlined my reasons above - there are no good reasons why wombat are not moved out of belfast to a greater pool of progamming talent and/or cheaper programming talent.

99.999% of the time motivation is always money (or driven by it when you scratch the surface)
so to keep the work in belfast flies in the face of current modern industry standard practice !
take off the blinkers!
good lad !!

whatever - as i said you have no idea what the motivations are for NYSE. Your guesses are passed of as facts.
Wombat provided more than just code monkeys as well.

By the way do you accept some devlopment teams are better than others? Or do you think you can just give a task to any team and get the same results?

you are trying to say this is a guess on my part, but compare this instance that stands out like a sore thumb bucking the current industry standard practice trend.
So what I am saying makes business sense.

belfast and indeed the north of Ireland is not a hotbed of software development - lets be honest. Thats why so many of you were and are still down here.

as for the metrics on the efficiency of programming?
thats a whole new ball game. Do you measure it on the completion date achievement, the quality of code based on its efficiency/how many lines it uses/resource usage, or do you measure it on accuracy of objective and the satisfaction on user requirements.

Every team is different, a lot of teams would include 'hackers' .
so if you are measuring - you would have to measure on an individual level  !!

Some of my good friends are self confessed 'hackers' and get the job done. Others are relatively well known programming geniuses and sticklers for detail - and are in demand by a lot of diff companies!!

Belfast/the north is not that bad for software devlopment - NYSE, citi, kainos, bt etc
In fact the main "rival" that exists to the wombat software about Ireland/UK is fidessa - with their office in belfast.
Also throw in First Derivatives of Newry as a software company that works in the same sphere.

Quoteas for the metrics on the efficiency of programming?
I was referring more to the measurement of the team - and it is getting the job done.
Look at wombats growth over a 5 year period to the point it was bought.
The Wombat team was very successfull (and this is not just developers) and in a niche market, so a lot of their skills are not easily available elsewhere.

belfast and the north has increased workforce and jobs in this arena recently alright! Still a v small pool though.
It may be a niche right now, but historically these 'niches' dont last long.

hopefull they will see sense and move it to Dublin !!
