old football was crap. how many training sessions did county sides put in in those days anyway? tyrone have taken the gaa forward and everyone should realize that. TOTAL FOOTBALL. down are worried that if tyrone win another sam this year they will undoubtedly be the best team ulster has EVER produced!!

Maybe the best team the 6 counties has produced but it will be along time before Tyrone by pass Cavans teams of the 30's, 40's and 50's.

I can understand why Down would feell left out with the the way the game has progressed. I was talking to a family member of one of the 60s innovators and she eventually conceded that they fear Tyrone rendering their proudly held position obsolete.  Thats the nuts and bolts.  My feeling would be they should be watching Jack Kyle and the great standard setters of Irish rugby who were in a similar privelaged position but who were just as obsessed with getting their own record broken in the name of sport and progress.     If Tyrone were as obsessed with tradition as Down they would have zero all irelands. 

100%. This was made clear to me on two occasions. When TnaG did a documentary on Joe Kernan, there was a scene when Kernan met Paddy Doherty on the steps at some club game I think. The mic was on Kernan and he looked decidedly uneasy when Doherty said something along the lines of 'hope you win Joe, as long as those BLEEPERS Tyrone don't.'

Secondly was when he bleated on about Canavan's record not being as good as his.

I actually like Down, their team and their supporters but some of their footballing legends, even as recent as Ross Carr, have a serious chip on their shoulder about Tyrone and their current success. Why I don't know. Down were the standard bearers up here and were liked by virtually every county in the country after 1960.

I have some sympathy for Down and their proud tradition when you see the standard of football they have to follow now .... Down are going through a very bad run .....

One thing is sure - they have produced some great footballers and great teams over the years.

Watch this clip. When you break down what he's actually saying, he's lamenting modern football because players don't make as many mistakes or 'take risks' as he puts it. It's quite a ridiculous argument. It's like saying exams are crap now because pupils are taught better.

I'd say players express themselves far more now than they did then - you only have to look at the '56 clip on this board where defenders simply lump the ball as soon as they get it. You wouldn't have found a Justin McMahon running half the length of the field then.

He cannot bring himself to say one good thing about Tyrone and has his answer off to a tee regarding the front door/back door. Is he saying winning 3 Ulster games (against crap opposition) and 2 Croke games was better than the 10 games Tyrone travelled in 2005?

Any team with aspirations of winning an All Ireland in the modern era tailor their training with the plan of peaking in August and September. That leaves any team liable to getting caught in the Provincial stages of the Championship. It's happened to Galway, Kerry and Tyrone since the introduction of the back door and it's hard to argue that those teams weren't the best in the country in those respective years. Like the teams in the bygone days, you have to play the hand you're dealt.

Tyrone are having their day in the sun in recent times but maybe in 30 years time it will be the turn of say Monaghan (god forbid), maybe new levels of skill and fitness will be reached. Maybe the Monaghan fans of 2039 might then look back at Tyrone of 2008 and say how mediocre football was then. Would the Tyrone fans of 2039 accept that devaluing of their all irelands? I doubt it, no more than Down fans or Cavan fans will accept that their all irelands were won when football was of a crap standard. It always pays to look at things from the other side.
