Without a doubt the best free taker is Emlyn Mulligan (Leitrim) just unknown (for obvious reasons)

Yeahbecause he is always taking frees under pressure in big matces

I know who I would rather in my team hitting the frees any day

Hardy

I would put Meehan and Sheahan a good bit ahead of everybody else for free taking (though I haven't seen Mulligan). They are the only two that seem to me to be reliable from any distance. Meehan shades it for me - you are almost certain he'll score from anywhere inside about 60 metres, whereas I'm sure I've seen Sheahan miss a few. Does anybody have statistics on their hit rates?

The GAA

Even still there are few shoe ins for all stars. Good league and provincial performances can get you nominations but all stars are won from quarter final on. that said, i've seen players win them on final performances alone. off the top of my head, nominations that would be there or there abouts might be:

Murphy, cluxton, Quirke.

o'se, Bradshaw, malone, Henry, Lynch, Hanley, Sherry, Keane, Griffen,

O'Se, Morris, Morrissey, McKeever, O'Mahony, O'Rourke, Cullen, Cahill, Ennis,

O'Se, Ryan, McGrath, O'Neill, Flannagan, Galvin.

Walsh, Cooper, Sheehan, Connolly, Barry, Woods, Little, Joyce, Cavanagh,

Brogan, Ryan, Donaghy, Clarke, McDonnell, Freeman, kingston, Forde, Meehan,

Kerry - 9
Dublin - 8
Wexford - 5
Galway - 4
Armagh - 4
Cork - 3
W Meath - 3
Fermanagh - 3
Limerick - 2
Monaghan - 2
Tyrone - 1
Laois - 1

The GAA

Should declare Armagh bias from the outset of course and all the criticism which that brings!

Vaughan had an unbelievable day against Derry in last year's quarter I thought.

Sheehan shades it for me, although Meehan looked awesome at the weekend (as he did with his 0-11 against Sligo a couple of years ago?)  Seen a fair bit of both players, whether in schools, university, underage and now senior, and Sheehan just seems to have a range beyond everybody.  In terms of frees, I believe he can become the best ever (no exaggeration attached.)  Conversion rates would be interesting, but I don't think they always tell the full picture.  I recall a player in my club, probably about a 80% conversion on anything inside 35yards (100% on frees with no pressure and about 10% on any with pressure!)

never kickt a ball

After yesterday V Dublin a few Tyronies have moved up the pecking order. Dooher in particular and maybe Cavanagh. Justin McMahon ticking along nicely at full back and a big game against Wexford could see him and a few others work their way into contention. The same could apply to Wexford too.

ExiledGael

Enda McGinley slowing but surely nailing down a midfield slot. Of the Dubs only Ryan/Cluxton/Alan Brogan have any chance now, and probably very little chance at that.
McCullagh done himself no harm yesterday and he's one I hadn't considered at all.

sam03/05

Ryan McMenamin
Conor Gormley
Justin McMahon
Enda McGinley
Sean Cavanagh
Tommy McGuigan
Colm McCullagh
Brian Dooher

all of them must be contenders

McGuigan McGinley  Cavanagh  McMenamin in particular have been superb

Puckoon

Colm McCullagh while written off and too light has been to the fore in the last two tyrone games in croker.

Worth a nomination surely?

ONeill

McCullagh has really found his role in this team. Whereas he was never convincing as an out-an-out forward, his foraging role, almost McGuigan-like, has shown a highly intelligent and exciting side to his game. Reminds me of McAnallan in '03 - almost by accident you uncover a new gem.
I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

Sean Cavanagh and Enda Mc Ginley will have to be shoo ins at this stage -

Brian Dooher's display was described today by Colm O'Rourke as one of the best individual dispays in Croke Park for years -

Does this mean he's a shoo in as well ?

As Mickey says, One Swallow Doesn't Make a Summer. The same should be said about mistakes.

As someone stated earlier, McGinley has been outstanding for Tyrone this year and been very constitent. Definately would have to be in the running for an All-Star.

Come on now - Mc Menamin has been superb - He made slip against down fair enough, but his form has been superb -

Will Benny even get nominated ?
