Was the emissions thing not a complete red herring with the push to electric cars and the ban on new ICE cars coming in by 2030. The road probably wont even have been started by then never mind open.

Apologies for what may seem a stupid question.....when land is vested, the farmers get paid for it..so when it is returned..do they give the money back or keep it and the land?

I imagine that will be a time consuming project to get it back probably fraught with legal challenges.

They didn't have to return the money and the landowners were also compensated as a lot of the ground between Ballygawley & Omagh had already been dug up.

Its an all time swindle, there's land owners being enriched by the ongoing litigation

Paid when the land was vested
Land handed back when the scheme was quashed with reinstatement costs covered
Land vested again, triggering another round of compensation and costs
Then handed back again, with further occupation and reinstatement liabilities

You can be sure they're working on the next round of appeal

So farmers will basically get paid three times for the same parcel of land?

Definitely not, if that was the case the cost of the road would have nearly trebled.

Sorry if this has been talked about as I don't read back much beyond the last post, is the main reason for accidents on that road the overtaking lanes that change here and there?
I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

I think there's a huge amount of side roads which come out onto the main A5 road which doesn't help either.

A bit like the A1 from Hillsborough to Newry but at least that's dual carriageway.

But both very dangerous roads.

There is a shocking lack of progress on the A1, and likely there will be shocking lack of progress on the A5.

Very few overtaking lanes, long stretches of unsafe roads for overtaking and multiple side roads all contribute. I was once stuck behind a lorry and a few cars from Canavans until strabane which is about 30 odd miles because there was no where safe to overtake. Very frustrating i have to say.

I saw 2 cars overtaking on crazy parts of the road because they were fed up stuck behind the traffic.

that A1 is a dangerous f**ker with tractors etc and should definitely be upgraded so it's proper motorway the whole way to Belfast. But the A5 is priority for now.

The A5 at night is a horrible drive, I avoid it as much as I can

They can't do that though. It will be upgraded (eventually) so there's no right turns allowed but unless you build a parrallel B road the length of it to take tractors etc you can't make it a motorway.

I would take an odd right turn off the A1 but would never use any of the crossing lanes to turn right onto the A1. Madness that still happens - so dangerous.
