30 years since Beckham's goal v Wimbledon from the  halfway line

For a bonus point , who  provided the assist, and who was the Wimbledon goalkeeper?

I had always thought it was Dave Beasant who I thought was a hero and why I wanted to be a goal keeper (Him, Erk Thorstvedt, Southall - before the haydays of Schmeichel, etc..

But I don't think it was. Hell of a cross however. My Bryllcreem stock went mental.

Edit: me auntie Ella bought me Erik Thorstvedt gloves in the now defunct Fairway sports in Omagh in 1989 and I took many a stingers to them fingertips. Worse than Mikasa. But a great memory never the less.

Gary Bailey was THE keeper  when I started taking an  interest. He just looked the part  as well.

Didn't he  go to work in TV in South Africa? Haven't heard  from him in years (Never sends a  Christmas card or anything these days)

Serie A was considered the cream of football  then, but in reality it  was  probably dire enough stuff. It was the big names  that drew me in  though, Gullit, Vialli, Van Basten ,  Lombardo, Ravenelli, Baggio,   Rijkaard, and a strange fascination as to  how Gazza (and Platt, Des Walker) was getting on. And later,  Paul  Ince.

RTE had a highlights show  on a Monday night too. Theme tune  brings me right back.

Italian football and the League were very strong from 1990-2010. They had the best players.
AC Milan was very strong compared to now.

I remember in 1996 Man U played Juventus in the Champions League and Dunphy was highly critical of English football in comparison to Italian football at the time. He called it "scrap". And 90 mins later, United had lost 1-0 in a game that should have ended 4/5-0 to Juve. And that was with the foreign rule gone, which was often what English fans hid behind for their team's failings in Europe, rather than just not being good enough outside of their own pond.

English football did overtake Italian, but at the time Italian was class in comparison.

Berlusconi called it 20 years ago, Italy lagged while clubs in England redeveloped stadia, I'm not saying Hillsborough was the making of English football but it was the seed/final straw that resulted in the creation of the PL

England and Italy have the strongest concentration of historic, legacy football clubs in Europe, its a shame Italy has fallen away and will always be weird seeing World Cup final team sheets with players from Villa Brighton and the likes where it would have been Inter AC etc.

The Hillsborough disaster changed the whole mindset of stadium structures which help reduce, if not eradicate hooliganism within the grounds.

This made the PL more palatable to the rest of the world, Sky picked up on it and the rest is history.
