Mladic's son, Darko, and wife, Bosiljka, attended the funeral at the Topcider cemetery and were both seen kissing the general's coffin.

The funeral service was led by Patriarch Porfirije, the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, in a sign that support for Mladic extends to the highest levels of Serbian society.

The commemoration was attended by Russia's ambassador to Serbia, as well as three Serbian government ministers and Milorad Dodik, the Bosnian Serb nationalist leader.

Mladic, one of the most notorious war criminals of the 20th century, died last month at the age of 84 in prison in The Hague.
