I think that ESRI report was responsible for the change from 18 to 17
It was responsible for the short season as well.

I'd happily see it all live back to 17/15/13. The segregation between adult and juvenile grades was a real plus.

I'd be even happier again if county minors didn't have such a stupidly long season. There's just no need for young fellas to spend an entire summer playing county football. No need.

Best years of their lives. Most won't make a senior panel, even less will feature in meaningful games. Let them have the honour of representing their county for as long as possible.

One amendment that should be done at club level in the north is move it to 12.5, 14.5 etc so that it's lined up with school years. No brainer for me

Disagree on your first point.

Agreed on your 2nd one. It would also help a lot of rural clubs with playing numbers at underage level.

Fair enough, any reason you don't agree on first point?

The school year thing is a big one for me tbh, not right that lads in the same class are playing on different club teams

Quote from: thewobbler on December 03, 2025, 02:22:04 PMI don't think it's a better way Armagh18.

Somewhere along the line lads have to work out if lads a couple of school years above them are better, or vice versa.

What you're suggesting here is in effect putting that on hold until they're adults.

Furthermore the unintended consequence of keeping everyone in school years is that their development then takes place in silos, and integration at adult level can only become more difficult.

And last but not least, all you actually end up doing is taking the best month to be born in away from January, and placing it firmly in July. For the July birthdays then get it better at club level as well as at schools level where they've always had it.

Anyone who wants to move to school year age groups, I'd welcome counter arguments.

Fair enough Wobbler and all valid points, just don't like the idea of people in the same class in school not playing at the same age group, especially in 7th year half the lads still minor and half playing senior. You'll always obviously play against lads that are older eg when you're under 17.5 you'll be playing against lads u18.5, and in most clubs your u14.5s will be playing u16.5 to make up numbers, in school the best players in each year are always asked in to play with the year above.

On your last point, just means the family planning has to be adjusted ;)

Why is school year better than calendar year? I've never quite understood that argument. Not sure why being in the same class in school is such a big thing.

trueblue1234

Just means friends are generally kept together. Can encourage some lads to stay at the football if their mates are going. Just seems a better option to me imo.

Can never understand this logic either. I'd be happy for someone much smarter than me to explain the rationale behind it.

Surely it can only be a good thing if kids are mixing and making new friends rather than being stuck in the same clique all the time.

In primary schools it is a good thing to keep kids in their same peer groups when they go play hurling/football.

Less important at secondary education as kids are more inclined to disperse to different schools and peer groups change, but I wouldn't be against it.

We still need the overlap at U18 (U18.5) with adult to blood young lads into the adult game and still having the opportunity to drop into their core age group during the year.

The hard stop at U17 in club level was an unmitigated disaster as it's a year earlier in their full physical development and if they struggle at adult, it can lead to larger drop outs.

U20's at club level is a struggle to fit into the fixtures calendar in most counties due to the large overlap with adult fixtures.

I didnt see much wrong with the 14 / 16 / 18 split. Primary school Go Game type stuff stays with the classes but as you say JC after that definitely not that important. I would like to see a return to the u21 instead of u20, give a lad another year of hurling (even if it is short) prior to going full senior.

Is minor not gone back to u18 in most Counties?
The report by Fogarty refers to inter County.
2026 the year of the 9 Cups

Inter County Minor still u17 - Club mainly seems to have returned to u18

Quote from: Rossfan on August 22, 2026, 10:20:39 AM90% voted against that minor final before senior so beloved of (some) 6 Cos folk.
The u18 inter Co Minor was roundly defeated a few years ago.

It's not just 6 counties folk, it's virtually every intercounty hurler or footballer who I've heard interviewed who had the great fortune of playing in a minor final prior to a senior final too.
That said, I could live with them being played before senior semis, with the tailteann and mcdonagh finals on before the senior finals. Either way, the day would benefit massively from the addition of a curtain raiser, turn it into a real festival of gaa.

Btw, what's your reasoning for not playing minor finals before the senior games?
