Swatragh got players but panel does not seem big, even with a reserve team. Some players spend their time chatting to the ref.

Quote from: Wildweasel74 on July 09, 2026, 09:51:46 PMSeen him a few weeks back twice now, filled out rightly, be a big add on once he gets to full fitness! Was the big lad Quinn playing against Bellaghy. He easy to pick out at wing forward, hes huge, was injured a few weeks bck.
No didn't play, very young but a great catcher of ball.

They are a strange team Swatragh, don't think they are in any running for a championship or anything like that but I wouldn't think anyone would want to play them.
Conor Mc Atamaney, 3 kearneys, Oisin Mc Williams along with few other very capable players they are hard to work with.
Wonder how big an impact Anton Tohill would have had for them. He'd be a massive addition. Hasn't played any club football which is a pity, he needs it to try and fulfil his county ambitions. (That still exist if listen to Football Pod Podcast)

I'm not sure that's true, a decent spine on paper, but they've had the same spine for almost 10 years now and never really made any sort of a break through. I'd have had the opinion 5-6 years ago that teams might not want to play them, but that boat has sailed for me.

Twin Kearneys 30
Sean Kearney 25
McWilliams 28
*not stating they are old - just stating they are all kicking about this last 7-12years and have never pushed on.

If Tohill has ambitions of playing county football (I listened to the podcast) he needs to play club football first. On Podcasts saying he want's back on the county panel, how many club games has he played in the past 2 years? I know it sounds harsh, or like I've something against him, but it's a harsh reality.

I agree with that too,  just saying when you look at that spine and add in a few good solid club players on paper they do look like a strong opposition, probably somewhat under delivered a few years back when Enda Mc Ginley managing them.

Yes thats right about Tohill, I 100% think there was pressure put on Matthew Downey that if you want to be a starter in the current Derry set up you need to be playing good standard of club football regularly. Arseing about playing 3 championship games in Antrim was holding him back

I think Downey good enough but with him been out so long past 3yrs it takes a long time to come bck to the level of fitness. Hopefully him and McWilliams are injury free from now to nxt yr.

Are some of them lads still playing in Belfast?

As someone else said, would they be on panel if it wasn't for the name?  This is not being harsh but just an assessment.

How many times has the older lad played for Derry this past 7/8 years really? Always on the fringes of the panel and has never cemented his place. Either that or injured. Can't be a squad player eternally. Must come a point where people need to push on or not.

Now is a great chance for CM to have a look at junior, intermediate and senior club games in Derry over the next 3 months. If he's diligent enough, he hopefully should find a couple of players who he thinks will be on his team.

Theres a place for squad players in any set up, its actually something that Derry are missing and need to try and get more of.
Theres plenty players are massive club players but don't just have that edge for county first 24, these lads are crucial for long term development of a squad.

Not sure what you mean. Every county, including Derry, have a panel of about 36 players, maybe one or two more. They have a squad.

How long is long term development?  My point is, and this relates to the majority of county panels, when you're on a panel for 6 or 7 years and you're not really making an impact, then that's a worry. Would you not be wondering why are you there?

If you're in 3 years and not making much of an impression game wise, what's the point?

As an aside to that, the GAA should have a rule that No. 22 - 36 are released back to their clubs to play for their clubs in their league. Not occasionally, but all the time.

Wildweasel74

Slaughtneil sore enough on Glenullin after a even enough first 15/20 mins last nite,McGuigan and Bradley fair lot of their scores. They not win the championship  with their half forward line if McGuigan held, there to win ball more than scoring.

Its hard to make an impression with Derry when the past 3/4 managers wouldnt play new players on a regular basis, Armagh 7/8 different starting players and 4/5 sub from what We played them in 2023 with no decent underage or club set up.Derry had 4 outta 5, strong under 20 teams past 5 years. We no excuse.

Of course they have a squad but theres a pattern of players who I would put somewhere between 16 and 25 in Derry football who if they don't get their place for 2 or 3 games they walk away and are replaced by weaker players who are happy to be involved but probably haven't the quality to be there . The top counties have far more quality in their squad and that improves standards as a hole.

Very few players commit for 3 years with limited game time.

Hope he finds a few but I'm not sure who or where they are. The majority are there perhaps too young and few injuries but they are around the set up.

I see Banagher are well ahead in Div. 2 league. With Desertmartin in second place.

Teams have played 14 games - is that a double round league? Might be pushed for time to finish it?

Early days but looks like Desertmartin might get a play-off spot if they continue their current form. Been a while since Desertmartin were in Div. 1 I'd say?

Brendan

There's a split in Division 2 after 11 games, Banagher confirmed promotion last night with a win away to Coleraine. Intermediate championship wide open

There's Tally working with Mayo and in All-Ireland Final.  Playing a nice style of football.

Derry let him go/pushed him out too early.

Mayo mightn't win AI but have progressed well under Moran and Tally's input, I'm sure, is a big part of it.

I take your point but they have scoring forwards that we lack.
