Reading Karla's Choice at the minute. Written by Le Carre's son Nick Harkaway. A good read and the style very much in tune with his Da's work (and much better than Silverview.)

Quote from: DaleCooper on June 07, 2026, 12:02:24 PMBeen watching Le Carré films/German classics

"Spy who came in from the cold"

"Tailor of Panama"

"Most wanted man"

All worth watching.

M [1931] and Lives of Others [2006] are masterpieces of cinema.

The BBC t**ker Tailor and Smileys People with Alec Guinness are a masterclass.

Guinness was so good that Le Carre changed how Smiley was subsequently written to match the actor

Agreed. Has to be one of the best TV series, ever. Alec Guinness proved that [sometimes] less is more & he didn't need to pull off any histrionics to nail that part completely. It has to be said that the whole show had an absolutely stellar cast, that backed Guinness up.

Plus, whilst we are on about the spy genre, an honourable shout out to the Ipcress File, which is still a favourite film of mine.

The BBc skipped over the Honourable  Schoolboy in favour of the 3rd in the Karla trilogy, Smileys People, which is also excellent. Although a youngish Patrick Stewart popping up as Karla is a suprise

Think there is a radio play version of the honourable schoolboy.

As this is the film thread I'll say Guiness was also very good in Star Wars.
Apparantly on cost grounds and you can remove the HS and 1 and 3 still work.

Eamonnca1

Pressure. Saw it last night. Great show. Fascinating story of the allies planning the D-day landings and the weather forecast that made it possible, and could easily have gone the other way. Great casting, writing, and acting. Best film I've seen in the cinema in a while.

Day of the Jackal 1973. Long on my list got it on last night. What a film, the footage of France of that era with military parade etc is lovely.

Excellent on big screen.

I haven't seen the mandolorian film yet but I did come across some star wars AI films recently on YouTube and they are really well done. I mean the effects of placing the original actors into new stories is way better than anything Disney have done with all their money. I defo recommend for any fans of the old films. One of them is set at Jabbas palace and it's almost like you are watching a load of deleted scenes from return if the jedi.

Amazingly shot. Maybe time to watch it again.

Id rather gouge my eyes out. Fun fact, the last use of guillotine in France was same year Star Wars was released.

If there was any justice its what the ghouls who took over Disney would face. Poor Roy

Slightly disappointed with Spielberg's Disclosure Day.  Quite slow from the start.  It did get going a little but I wouldnt tell anyone to rush out and watch it.

Came across The Story of everything (Science documentary on Prime) without having heard anything about it. Have watched most of it a couple of times as I fell asleep (the original goal!). It's visually stunning on various topics but after a while sone of the conclusions are a bit Creationy for my tastes. Is this the future of Science / TV in the MAGA era? Doubt the BBC would have green lit this. Still, a good watch.

I remember reading reviews of it and the general theme was that it was an Intelligent Design puff piece.

Run Lola Run [1998]

On my list for a while and its fantastic. Only 81mins. Franka Potente some will know from first Bourne film. German classic.

Watched the Piano  years ago, thought it was rubbish. Took another go at it a few months back.  Thought it very good. The wee lassie's (Paquin)  performance was brilliant.

Years since I seen  Dead Calm. Can't recall much of  it.

Very good  actor he was  though.

Edit: just heard he was  in line to play Bond before Timothy Dalton got  the gig

Sometimes you have to do this with film.

Milltown Row2

The local wine store near me had him over for a wine tasting event a few years ago, was promoting a wine of his (obviously) he just had that laid back charm you don't expect from a top actor

My first film remembering him was The Omen, he played adult Damian! Oh the chills!!
