It was all absolutely set up for Mayo today and the first half completely proved that, they looked lovely and had a bit of bite, kicked some great two pointers and it was coupled with Monaghan looking way off it. However that second half was insane. Had Monaghan taken any further of their 8 goal chances the result would've been different. And throw in the point that was flagged wide wrongly. You can't put all the difference in performance in the second half down to a mid strength wind.

Wise up

The ref had absolutely no bearing on that game

Just the few shoves on Monaghan players in the box, the free at the end.

The point by McCaul waved wide.

Youre crying about shoves? What do you think this is, golf?

Back to your cricket lad up there in UK. Or maybe marching

The umpire called the wide ffs! Brainless

The shoves! My god.

Followed by some shite about watching cricket up there? Where's up there?

Mayo came into this game from a thumping from Roscommon in the Connacht-Semi.
Monaghan came into todays game after a really good Ulster Championship, bringing a really good Armagh to extra time in the Ulster Final.
Monaghan have proven this Summer to have real bite in them coming into the closing stages of matches.
This is not the Mayo team circa 2012-2017. This bunch are no where near that group Mentally, Physically or Skill wise.
This is probably Mayo at their best in their current guise. To expect more at this stage of their development is bordering on delusional.

Part of the drop off the 2nd half was subbing players who are not fully back from knocks - it's called chancing your arm that we'll see out the game and giving these guys a chance to recuperate for the next tasks ahead.  The wind had a small bearing and the point waved wide - these things happen. You can't blame anyone for human error. As for the rest, Mayo got for 5 weeks - Would not playing competitive games make you sharper during that period. I know Andy let a few lads go back to play with their clubs to fill the void.

Derry and Armagh could not beat this bunch in normal time - and both had sizable leads against Monaghan going into the home strait. To belittle Mayo's win by a slender margin is a touch disrespectful to this Monaghan side - they are no handy pushovers in Championship.

To be fair I'd much rather the stern test Mayo got from Monaghan today than the feeble test Galway got from Kildare in Salthill. Which was nothing more than a training game run out.

Cliche but you can never ever write that Monaghan team off. Any win against them whatever way it comes is a good result. Only for a hoodoo on umpteen goal chances, a clear point given wide and their main threat suffering a freak injury they quite possibly win that game.

Again and again in the last 4 years it's been shown that the team off the big break has an advantage. Monaghan in 2023 going to Derry and drawing when Derry won the same game easy in Ulster. Mayo beating Kerry by 6 in Killarney. Westmeath running Armagh to a point in Armagh. Cavan beating Mayo. Tyrone beating Donegal in Ballybofey last year. Louth beating Dublin today. Donegal hammering Kerry in Killarney. All inferior teams (or at least outsiders) beating or going close to the supposed better opposition away from home

There's loads more examples. Again and again it's been proven that the team coming off a layoff with a point to prove has a massive advantage over the team coming off a provincial final and a short break. And that's not even to say Mayo are inferior to Monaghan, I think most people would rate them as a superior group. So it was really all perfect for Mayo. They had 2 challenges in recent weeks also

It's not all gloom obviously. Kobe looks sensational for as long as he stays. That's RODs first great championship performance in a while coming off a nightmare 2025. The keeper obviously had a dream debut. It's just all the more odd how they finished it hanging on, especially in context of the ridiculous amount of Monaghan chances missed

I don't get your point - Mayo won the game today against very good opposition. If we had lost it would not have been shameful either. Monaghan are a good side.

Monaghan had 2 weeks to prepare for this - not 6 days. Two weeks is a decent amount of time to get over the disappointment of losing an Ulster Final (which is an important title up there), recovering from minor knocks and refocusing the group.

There is no gloom with this Mayo side - they are a decent bunch who will give most a decent game - but they are not world beaters. The expectation has lowered and that's no harm. The Manager and this group need space to develop.
Kobe is a short term fix, He will be gone in the Winter and he is making the correct decision. The financial rewards for players in the GAA are poor.

No, first out has home advantage.

Didn't think that Monaghan 'point' was clear cut at all. You can't tell from the TV angle when it actually came in, it might have already gone wide by then.
