I appreciate there is no such thing as cheap car insurance but wondering if anyone has any recommendations / good experience when adding an L driver to their own insurance.

Marmalade insurance is worth a look.

Used them for two of mine, no complaints whatsoever.

If you go down the route of fitting a black box please be careful as the small print varies wildly across insurers. I know of 2 people who have had their insurance pulled without warning die to breaches. There are restrictions on times you can drive etc. My middle fella and his mates took turns doing lifts on nights out when he was at school and there were restrictions on driving after midnight etc.

Black boxes are the biggest rip off, best avoiding.

Anybody who has insured their children, what generally was cheaper - going third party in their name or being a named driver under your policy?

Any insurers that are 'better' for young drivers?

Unless the car is dirt cheap amd you're prepared to write it off at your own cost I'd avoid 3rd party especially as teen drivers are at highest risk of an accident. I'd go for the named driver option for the peace of mind of fully comp cover.

Ive looked after my wifes early 20's sisters insurance for the last few years so may not be the same thing. In the North.  If they have one they are going to be the sole or main driver for its much better to have it in their name with 2 or sometimes 3 named drivers who are experienced.  If its your car then named under your policy.  I found saying the child's parents were the main driver and the child was a main driver was not interpreted favorably if the parents had insurance on another car in their own name.

As for companies I found Sterling good for learner insurance and it used to transfer to full insurance for the rest of the term if you passed your test although i think it was 6 months and not 12 months packages. (Not sure of the legality of it not automatically transferring over but that's an issue for a different day)

Be wary of black box products particularly if theres multiple users of the car or driving to be done late evening or night time.  Currently suing Hastings over some of the stuff they have tried.

Always found compareni a good reference point for obtaining quotes

Have many taken out a new policy, in addition to one you have for your own car, and put their child down as named driver? Or even included their wife too?

Any good news insurance stories or anyone got any decent pricing recently?

My renewal came through this morning, up £90 on last year.

No, never thought of trying that but check if it's allowed and how much you'd actually save as i'm sure they would have already thought of that.
As David mentioned stay away from Block Box policies as you think you're saving £1k at the time but a few cancelled policies later it ends up costing you more. We have had two cancelled policies recently...1 for driving at night (that's what young ones do) and the other for having an accident which we also took the case up with Finanical Ambudsman and still got raped so stay away from Hastings and Black Boxes if you can...

I've the young lad on a car with Hastings and a black box...

Is there an issue with driving at night with them?

No, not Hastings...I think it was Admiral that cancelled on us for driving at night.

My cub had a minor accident and Hastings cancelled the insurnace on him and kept the £2k ploicy fee and said it was in the small print. Took them up on it but Finanical Ambudsman took their side

You can do it but if the kid is the main driver instead of you it's called "fronting" and if found out that the kid is the main driver then it can void the policy.

My wife's has come down by about 16% each of the last two years

I changed my car last year and found it cheaper to cancel my existing policy and get a refund for the remaining 8 months and buy a new 12 month policy on my new car than it was to just shift the 8 months of the existing policy over to the new motor.

Made me realise that changing your policy as you go can actually save money
