Lads or lassies. Can we stop picking out players on this forum?

These lads give up their time and represent our county. Out three/four nights a week, giving up their time.

We should be proud of their efforts.

Onwards and upwards (but not backwards or sidewards)

no stirieking

Couldn't agree more tickle. Support our team

Beat tyrone on saturday night and meath in croke park will be forgot about. It was a disappointing performance for sure but some of the overreaction from the 1st proper game of the season is a bit harsh. I do agree with most of the comments however having witnessed us storm division 1 2 years ago under harte to then failing to win a game last year under tally (a lot of those games we were acutally decent and threw games away from winning positions late on) i feel we have to just take a step back and allow Ciaran and management team to try and build a stronger squad and hopefully get a few wins under our belts. Rome wasnt built in a day. Some of our key players did look miles off it but then again lads it was the 24th january. The return to full fitness of gareth clucky and paudi with a full league behind them will also help is massively. My honest opinion is that our team were coached to play the running game from deep under Rory before the rule changes where introduced. The bulk of our best football was played with attacks being built from deep with ball moving through the hands of clucky CD gareth and Odhran lynch. Short kickout suited that team becauase we could use Lynch. The rule change has meant we cant use keeper and its forcing us long anad we are being wiped out at midfield. Its only my opinion off course lads but thats where i feel our confidence has gone. We were a team so used to having primary possesion and being able to dicate and control every game we played and picking and choosing when to open teams up with those driving runs from deep. I do feel Ciaran and his team will get this right. It could take a topsy turvy league campaign to implement a new style for this team and to build the squad. If by end of league we are sitting 3rd or 4th with 3 or 4 new players involved and performing well then il be happy enough with that. Its about derry getting a consistency again. A win over tyrone saturday can hopefully be the beginning of the revival. Hopefully we get a massive crowd out to support the lads

Maghera was Black

Jez lads talk about an overreaction you'd think the world was ending reading some of these posts. And the football snobbery of so called knowledgeable football supporters looking down your nose at a top 8 team in Meath, as I stated in my last post the Royals were going all out for promotion with proper challenge matches over the winter even Brennan came to watch our McKenna cup game in Celtic park where as the sounds bites coming from Meenagh were that we are not risking men and want to get our bodies right with league games coming thick and fast. Reading between the lines sounds like he will be happy to stay in D2 for another year. I'd be ok with that if players are given proper minutes. One major concern for me was there was not one midfielder on the bench on Saturday which looks like we have just 3 Glass, Rogers and Dan Higgins who was last seen in a knee brace? Criminal to think we can get away with that in inter county with the new rules. I thought Meenagh was a smarter man that to hope CD and Paul Cassidy might dig us out of a hole and do a job if needed we are already struggling in that position and looks like we're not helping ourselves with no cover

Who wasn't risked?

Anyone not playing isn't even near ready.

Glass, McGuigan & Rodgers have all missed a right bit of training and all played the full 70mins.

I don't buy that we didn't try win the game, aren't aiming for promotion or other teams are taking the league more serious than us.

Good post and I agree.
Doesn't stop us being disappointed with an under-par performance, which I feel the meath game was. That's not taking away from Meath mind, I thought they defended really well and the speed of their transition from turnovers to attack was impressive.
We've a lot of improving to do, and as nice as promotion would be, div 2 is a better place to transition and bring on younger players to do that improving. Finishing top half of Div 2 would do nicely and as you say if we come out the other side with having adapted our game slightly, blooded some new players and keeping key men fit it would set us up for the championship.

What other Midfielders are there out there who could come in and do a job?
We are missing size - and Tally tried Tohill there last year with a mixed degree of success. He doesn't seemed to be involved this year. I still think we could find a role for Tohill given his size - even it's on the edge of the square and we have a plan-B approach to lump balls into the big man who can feed Shane/Murray/Loughlin.
Higgins will help, CD can absolutely do a job in MF as could McKinless. I'm not sure there a many/any other midfield options in the county.

DERRY are planning without Lachlan Murray for Saturday night's league clash with Ulster rivals Tyrone at Celtic Park.

The Oakleafers will also be without the injured midfielder Dan Higgins and will have to assess the fitness of goalkeeper Ryan Scullion.

Murray and Scullion were named to start Saturday's opener against Meath with the latter withdrawn during the warmup at Croke Park, just ahead of throw-in.

"He (Scullion) got a bit of a niggle on Wednesday night and we thought he was going to be okay," Meenagh said after Saturday's game.

"He was down to play but he was struggling with his long kicking, so we had to make that change literally two or three minutes before throw-in which wasn't ideal. That's just one of them things you have to be prepared for."

In Scullion's absence, Magherafelt's Shea McGuckin stepped in for his league debut.

Lavey's Louis Regan is the other goalkeeper on the panel, while Odhrán Lynch is on his way back from hip surgery with championship football a potential target.

Lachlan Murray scored 0-6 across Derry's two McKenna Cup games but picked up a knock in the week of the game and wasn't risked with the longer-term view in mind.

"We felt that it's probably better he be out for a couple of weeks now, just to get him right because you could lose him for two months," Meenagh said.

"We'll get (to) the break in the league and he should become an option again for us then."

Dan Higgins is expected to be out for six weeks following a knee injury picked up on Sigerson Cup duty with Queen's.

Ballinascreen's Martin Bradley, who broke into the team under Paddy Tally last season, has returned to training but Saturday came too early.

It will be a busy week for the Derry players on the Queen's Sigerson team with the quarter-final against TU Dublin on Wednesday night in Grangegorman (7.30pm).

While Dan Higgins, their captain, misses out, his younger brother Conall joins Patrick McGurk and Ruairi Forbes in the Queen's squad.

Forbes sat out last week's win over Ulster University while Patrick McGurk came on to make a vital impact including an assist for Joey Clarke's injury time insurance goal.

6 Weeks for Higgins wouldn't be bad, back for the tail end of league. If we could get that Magherafelt contingent Higgins, McEvoy and Lynch back with a healthy Murray for Ulster we should be in good shape for trying to make a final

Should we be talking about hoping who to get back from injury? Just think this might hurt the feelings of the lads who are not injured.

They are out 6 nights a week after all.

But from watching Sigerson there's a place for Tohill. Massive athlete, 2 points free taker and loads of energy.

One thing I am positive about and generally it takes us 2 days to analyse a game on here, when Ciaran Meenagh is interviewed straight after a game he always nails exactly what happened.
Hell of alot managers at every level skirt around with wishy washy empty answers that don't really mean anything which I always think indicates they need a meeting with a coaching team and stats man to really know what went on.

Hard to gauge where we are at

Players looked very very rusty basic mistakes cost us dearly, 3 balls were kicked in and dropped possession, 3v3 breach, would say that was as bad as any of the losses we had last year, and goal was very fortunate

Then in saying that id say Meath wont play much better and we only lost by 3 including the self inflicted breach

We really need to cut out the sloppiness and get up for this game on Saturday night

We just need a win to get the ball rolling and there would be no better way than beating our neighbours on Saturday night

Lets all get behind the team and kickstart our season
