"

"It comes after NI Minister Steve Baker reportedly said a border poll should need the support of a "super-majority".

At present, such referendums require a simple majority of 50% plus one.

Mr Baker cited his experience in the UK's Brexit referendum and said he regretted now it did not require the support of 60% of those who voted."

The UI has to be done properly. NI has a history of political violence. If that kicks off again there won't be support in the South.
The challenge is to get moderate Unionists in the camp. That means offering them better than what they have. The UI can't be half arsed.

We could achieve 70% support and there would still be violence. There is no possible way that there won't be a degree of violence when it happens. That should not be a reason for stopping it.

You lose a child over it you may think differently
I may, but the principle still stands. Change here in NI will not happen easily. We would be kidding ourselves to think it would and it would not need wide support for a small minority to cause havoc especially in something as significant as this. But I still don't believe you could decide to keep as we are, out of fear. How long do you wait?

I don't wait, I'm an Irish man living in Ireland

I'm neither oppressed nor less confident of who I am

Would I like to have a seamless transition? Yes, all day long

But I'm not prepared to go through or have my kids go through any, any troubles of the kind that I was lucky to get through without coming to harm.

If the vote comes I'll be voting for a UI, but not at any cost is it worth it, wasn't worth it the first time around

I don't understand? It'll just be a yes or no vote. It won't be asking what level of cost you're willing to accept. What comes after will come, we'd all hope for a peaceful transition but it would be naive to think that would be the case imo.

Jesus, I'd be voting for it should it cost me 100k a year worse off or if I'd to face danger from some loyalist scum paramilitary, whatever it takes.

Personally I'd be better off money wise, but that's not what I said, the cost is life which you can't put a price on. I've stated many times I'm voting yes, just concerned, and that's ok

Many a man died trying to free Ireland from British rule, things are obviously different now than they were 50 years ago and no one wants to go back to that. We all just have to accept each others cultures and get on with it, the Unionists accepting our Irish culture will be more difficult buy they know it's coming and they don't really have much choice. The first 10-20 years will not be much different to the way it is now and things will gradually be introduced through a generation or two.
I will vote for a united Ireland all day long and twice on a Sunday...

It's not just Unionists that will have to be accommodated. We will be a hugely diluted multicultural society especially in our Cities and towns in a half generation.  There will be groups that will not integrate no matter how much accommodation and that's their prerogative. But don't go expecting us to change our ways or water down our culture.

They did and natural colonialism died off in many countries with minimum destruction.

We've finally got to a point for unification by sheer numbers rather than bombing and shooting

Proclamation was written before commercial aviation and massive multinationals. Ireland is at mercy of these forces now and the actual nation will be gone by end of this century.

Its like the Japanese soldier on the island.

I didn't always feel this way about it but it's just reality.

Do you call what was on the  Late late show night "our culture".
The obsession with English soccer teams? RTÉ sport...",There are 3 Premier League teams in action tonight...."
Rugby?
Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

Yes, you'd have to call the Late Late show a form of our culture. It still resonates with many of the people of this land. The obsession with English soccer teams is the same as the obsession with English pop music - It's entertainment.

Do you watch the English Premier League? Listen to English Pop Music?

I was talking Country and Western music which was what the LLS was all about last night.
It's been prevalent here for 60 odd tears.

Not everything that is part of our culture is attractive or cool. But it's our culture - our ways.
