Quote from: Truthsayer on August 13, 2025, 10:44:17 AMIs always people opposed to change .. exactly that.. A 'No' mentality. Believe it or not, I recall when rules were changed to allow frees and lineballs to be taken out of the hands and there was ones totally opposed.. Always 'no' men..

Of course there are...in every sport.  We're known as traditionalists.

However it isn't ALWAYS NO.  It varies as people's opinions vary.  You should never belittle other's opinions by generalizing.

This is the problem I have with some fans.  They treat traditional views with little respect.

Been a bad 140 years for the "tradionalists".
Point posts, goals outweighing any number of points, goal equalling 5 points, 21 aside, 17 aside,no carrying the ball, sideline throws, 16 players lining up for the throw  in, kissing the bishops ring, the ban.....all gone!
Adding nets, big square, small D, big D, allowing frees from the hand, women referees, red, yellow and black cards,.......

Yes indeed.  We've never recovered from that William Webb Ellis character.

Change happens, that's life.  Traditionalists try to moderate it, progressives less so.  We gradually lose every time but that's ok.  No reason to throw the baby out with the bath water.

I'll tell you about the version of the game that you so fondly reminisce.

1. It was only made possible in 1990 after kicking frees and sidelines from the hand came into play.

2. It first reared its head in 2011, when Jimmy McGuinness clocked that prioritising possession v territory was the ultimate mindfuck in the game.

3. It began filtering through the adult game in 2013.

So this "tradition" you talk utter tripe on repeat about, it represents about 10-11 years of the association's 140.

Stop trying trying to pretend you've some kind of cultural / traditional leg up. You don't.

:D  plenty of those during the Kerry golden years.. more like a throw at times. The Bomber!

On that. Get rid of the handpass point. There's a rule change that has been overlooked. Because it doesn't favour forwards of course.

Rossfan

Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

Is that still allowed  in hurling?

Seen quite a  few of them on GAA Gold recently, and realised I hadn't seen one  in a long time. I'm assuming it's banned now?

It's gone! Most famous probably Johnny Flaherty throwing the ball over his shoulder for Offaly to win their first All Ireland final, 1981.
It was at a similar crucial stage of the game but
never got the acclaim that Seamus Darbys goal got a year later.
Sadly he has departed. RIP 🙏

🟥.

Throw points need to go too.

The throw /palmed  goals too

Clear fist only
We talk about bringing kicking back into the game and limiting handpassing yet we allow players to score using their hands.
All scores must be kicked with the foot. End of.

Oh dear! That's Armagh's All Ireland final goal ruled out!

Not sure how that would enhance the game...

Did a game up at your pitch recently, minor or under 16, can't remember, anyways the no. 14 put over the first 5 or 6 points by fisting them over the bar. His teams were about to badger him when he was about to fist them over but as he was scoring they started to congratulate him lol..

It's a hard one to defend against so profitable when done right

It doesn't take a lot of skill. I think it looks poor too. A lot of the time the back has done well to get himself positioned right to close down the kick and the forward is allowed to basically throw the ball over the bar.
In a world of rule changes, that's a no brainer for me but, as I say, we seem to only like rule changes that benefit forwards.

DaleCooper

Would be interesting to see the stats but a lot of hand fisted scores come from backs bursting through the lines.

Yeah it's definitely not a good look/action/score tbf
