Week 5

Group A

Kenagh v Killoe, Friday 8pm, Monaduff
Rathcline v Colmcille, Sunday 2.30pm, Ardagh
Mostrim v Granard, Sunday 2.30pm, Abbeylara

All relatively straightforward here with the two matches on Sunday just deciding relative placings, and Colmcille and Granard most likely to come off the better.

Group B

Mullinalaghta v Carrickedmond, Saturday 7pm, Ballymahon
Dromard v Longford Slashers, Saturday 7pm, Monaduff
Abbeylara v Clonguish, Saturday 6pm, Killoe

As we've said, at least in theory Clonguish could win by twenty against Abbeylara and still not qualify for the quarter-finals, but I think that's unlikely to happen and it's even less likely given certain features about our game. Slashers should complete what looked like an unlikely recovery to tie the top of the group with Abbey and Carrickedmond while Clonguish head for a quarter-final which would be a repeat of last year's final.

Kenagh 0-3 Killoe 4-19

Mullinalaghta 2-12 Carrickedmond 2-12*
Abbeylara 0-12 Clonguish 2-14
Dromard 2-16 Longford Slashers 0-8

*Giant can of worms here awaiting a tin opener. Carrickedmond clearly scored 5 - and only 5 - points in the first half of this game with Mullinalaghta leading 2-6 to 0-5. On the resumption of play, the referee ordered Carrickedmond's score to be increased to 6. The match then resulted in a draw with Carrickedmond getting a number of debatable frees towards the end and 56 minutes of stoppage time ending with the whistle being blown as soon as Carrickedmond finally equalised. The result at the moment is that Abbeylara top the group, followed by Clonguish, Mullinalaghta and Carrickedmond in that order and Dromard losing out due to the peculiarity of the Longford bye-laws going straight to points difference on the matches involving the tied teams if you have multiple teams level on points (the national approach of constituting a virtual mini-league with 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw among the teams level would have put Dromard through at the expense of Clonguish). If Mullinalaghta had officially won the match against Carrickedmond, then under either the national rules or Longford bye-laws they would have finished second**, Clonguish third, and Dromard fourth.

**No, apparently we would move ahead of Abbeylara into first place is my understanding.

Unbelievable stuff really. You could not have scripted this. This whole group stage format of the championship has been in operation a good few years and I've never seen a group as tight or as dramatic.

Hard to know now if objections will be put in.

Dromard would be fully entitled to raise Cain over this.

Well if there is video evidence, which there obviously is, then Dromard surely can appeal. In fact, Mullinalaghta could appeal too as it would give ye top position.

Be interesting to see how the ref report is worded.I can't see Carrick going through at this rate.

Mostrim 0-11 Granard 0-16

Two penalties missed for Mostrim.

Colmcille 2-13 Rathcline 0-8

My understanding is that Dromard cannot appeal directly, and that it is instead up to either of the teams involved in the match.

Shamrock Shore

Oh Lord. Not great, was it?

Have to beat our long time enemies to retain senior status.

Been senior since 1967.

Feck.

Quote from: LaurelEye on August 27, 2024, 07:39:05 AMBut I have very little doubt that there would be a Litigant Alert at that point. (If Dromard were to beat Slashers or if they and Slashers were to draw then that introduces a fourth team on five points and things become more complex still.)

*cough*

Sideliner

I hope you weren't insinuating that Clonguish would be the ones objecting😄😄

Nothing to do with us this time, thankfully😊

Do you see a replay happening with Mullinalaghta and Carrick?

I don't think so and to say we would vigorously object would be Understatement Of The Year; it would logically have to be either be the "original" result being allowed to stand or the correct result replacing it - or vice versa in the case of a counter-appeal. The ambiguity there is over placings and over whether Carrick or Dromard are the fourth team going through. This wasn't a winner-on-the-day match where a replay would be appropriate if the game had been wrongly prevented from going to extra time. But I haven't trawled the rule-book - at least not yet.

(Frankly the powers-that-be should be the ones proactively grasping this nettle rather than leaving it to the clubs, none of whose fault this mess is, to try to resolve it.)

Shamrock Shore

Has the referees report gone in yet?

That said, I'd throw both clubs out and bring Mostrim into the QFs direct and relegate Slashers.

Sideliner

Is there any further development?

There was talk of a meeting last night but heard nothing from it.
