Personally I'd blame the bookies for taking bets from him when they knew he had an addiction, but maybe he wasn't putting the bets on himself and was getting school kids to do 'runner' for him in return for buying their carry-outs for them.

McConville in appeal for addicts' support

Oisin McConville has revealed how playing with Armagh helped him to overcome his gambling addiction which left him with debts of EUR150,000.

But he believes that gambling and other addictions are common among sportspeople, who crave an adrenaline rush when they are away from the highs of competition, and has called for support structures to help them deal with their problems to be put in place.

"I don't know how prevalent it is, but it is a problem in society so it's going to be a problem in sport," McConville said at the launch of the AIB club championships in Belfast.

"A lot if it is trying to replace the adrenaline you get from playing on a football field in front of 50,000 people.

"It's a problem everywhere and it's widespread. They did a survey in Britain and they reckon that 2.5 million people are suffering from it. If that's the case, I'm not alone - even if I felt like it at the time.

"I think it's something that needs to be addressed. Someone at some level needs to look at it. I don't know whether that's within the GAA or the Sports Council or whatever, but something has to be done."
