Where is that  "Fergie Out" placard photo from OT these days ? Airbrushed out of history??? Am (sadly )of an age to remember when MU fans hated him and were booing/ jeering  him for the most of a season at least until he won the cup.

Was at a Manu Liverpool game during that period, Liverpool were a serious good team at the time and Liverpool were beating Manu 2-0 at the time laughing their heads off at the chats coming from the Stretford end of Fergie must go, they were singing Fergie must stay. Fair play to the Manu board and I'd say Busby had a big influence on the decision to keep him. The Pool went on to win 2-1 after a OG scored by Whealan from the half way line!! Brucey on the take :o

Next game was the cup match which Robbins, well you know the rest!!

By the time Utd played Liverpool in Old Trafford that year, they were already into the Cup semi final and were down to play Oldham. So the 'Fergie Out' movement should in theory have been quelled a little bit. They were still hovering above the relegation zone around this time though.

In hindsight, maybe the Mark Robins goal against Forest in the 3rd round isn't as significant as is now made out.
United's other Cup wins were narrow wins over lower division opposition until they got to the final against Palace. Had they lost any of them, it would have rendered the Forest win meaningless.

It was a harrowing cup run. Most of the games were against second division (now Championship) teams who were going well enough (Newcastle, Sheffield United, Oldham) and all were away. Jim Leighton was in goals suffering a confidence crisis until he eventually got dropped for Les Sealey! Replays in semi final and final. I almost missed Hughesies extra time equaliser in the final as I had to go play a game myself but he just scored before the lift arrived!

People forget how bad things were at and before that time. Injuries were a major problem but there were a lot of bad buys too. I was delighted when he was appointed but I must admit I was beginning to wonder if he was right for the job around then. Finishing 2nd in his first full season probably set the bar a little high because for all the talent United had in the mid 80's, and there was a lot, they were miles away from possessing the consistency required to be title challengers.

Robins got the winner near the end of extra time in the semi final replay.

I get you now. Robins did indeed score the extra time winner in the replay game against Oldham.
Usually, everyone refers to Robins' goal in the 3rd round against Nottingham Forest where allegedly Ferguson's job was on the line.

The 4th round against Hereford was even more perilous. Hereford dominated and should have been in the lead. Clayton Blackmore stole it with a late goal. If the directors had deemed Ferguson's job safe regardless of the 3rd round outcome, they might have changed their minds with a defeat here.

Funny how players like Blackmore wouldn't register in the club's history, yet it could have been very different without them.

Yeah and he scored some crucial goals in the CWC run the follwing year (the cracker away to Montpellier springs to mind). Lee Martin in the FA Cup final replay that year too is a good example.

I remember bits about the Hereford game. Pitch was not the best if I recall.

johnneycool

Was that the year he changed the keeper for the replay against palace?

The man's a genius. He gets the same type of response as Micko. Those who love him and respect what he has achieved. And then the others who know nothing about football/sawker.

Bit of a weird comparison for someone who has shown serious loyalty to MUFC over the years to be compared to a mercenary.

Loyalty??? Micko spent 35 or 36 years playing for or managing Kerry...he was entitled to go elsewhere when his time was up with them.

Blackmore also cleared a shot from Michael Laudrup off the line in the Cup Winners Cup final when Barca were pushing for a late equaliser. In what was probably his greatest performance for the club. Though Ferguson's job was probably safe by that stage.

Yip. Leighton was terrible in the 3-3 draw in the final so Sealey got the nod for the replay. Leighton was a good keeper in his day but was playing terribly at the time.

johnneycool

did they only get him on loan for that game or was he already at the club?

He was on loan at that stage and then signed during the summer and he was first choice the next season.
Apparently he didn't get on well with a lot of the squad. He died a few years later from a heart attack.

In December 1989, Sealey was loaned to Manchester United and made two league appearances during the final weeks of the season. He was named as goalkeeper for the 1990 FA Cup Final replay against Crystal Palace (even though United had signed him after the transfer deadline), after a poor display from Jim Leighton in the preceding 3–3 draw, and made several saves to help his side win 1–0. He later gave his winner's medal to Jim Leighton who had played throughout the cup run but the FA subsequently granted medals to both Leighton and Sealey.
