Sheamy is she from Culnady or Upperlands?  I drove through the latter a couple of times last week and it is properly festooned in pomp and pleasantry as usual  ::)

You could say both, Aerlik. Culnady (Cuil Cnadaidhe or "nook of the sluggard") is the townland whilst Upperlands (Upperlands or 'place of pomp and pleasantry') is the planted bawn town. She's from a couple of miles from the town I think.

Not quite right. Upperlands is in the townland of Ampertaine,  Áth an Phoirt Leathain, meaning "ford of the broad (river) bank". The Primary school in the village is called Ampertaine PS. Culnady is a separate village a few miles south west of Upperlands.

I didn't say Upperlands was in Culnady. I thought, or was led to believe, that WH was from the townland of Culnady, 2-3 miles from Upperlands (or Ampertaine or whatever people who couldn't pronounce Áth an Phoirt Leathain called it).

I misread your post, I thought that is what you were saying. I've never thought of Culnady as the townland and always associated the name with the village - a bit like Swatragh I suppose. WH's links seem to be more Cuil Cnadaidhe than  Áth an Phoirt Leathain.

If you come out of wee Pats and take a left down Shuck Street, when you get as far as the turn off for Carn View, McMaster's cattle lorry disappears from the front of the Hibernian hall.

Is this a street view issue or is it caused by what you've been drinking in wee Pats?

I think Lavey gave Ballinascreen an awful hiding in 1990. The day Paddy McGurk got booked twice.

I reckon Parnell would have held the crowd. Anyone meeting for pre-match pints?

Anyone see Paddy (Sports Writer of the Year/greying Derryman) Heaney's article in today's Irish News. He didn't want to just rant so threw in some story about an oul fellow who played for Derry (Sonny McCann 1947) and how stories of his greatness only exist through word of mouth. What he was really saying was that Martin Clarke has come back from Australia a little bit precious and won't give interviews ad hoc to the man who said Kerry would win in 2008 and 2005 unless they've been pre-arranged. He accuses Clarke of influencing other team members to take this stance.

I'd agree with Heaney on this to an extent. It'd be a pity if we headed down that road.

My father's always talking about him. He would have played against him. Some boy wrote a poem about him too. I saw it in a book at home. I will post it when I am next back at home. It tells about the time at Magherafelt Sonny took a fifty and knocked down two headstones in the graveyard which must have been some kick. And it tells about how Newbridge tried to kick him off the pitch one day but he didn't flinch.

QuoteMaghera : Gerald Bradley (S'Neil) 1-5, Neil McNicholl (Glenullin) 1-3, Stephen O'Hara (Glen) 0-1, Paul Gunning (Glen) 0-1, Paul McAtamney (Swatragh)  0-1.

Not sure what the team lineout was.

Was at MagheraMacRory game this mroning in Derrytresk, they beat Armagh by 10pts or so.

Team was: James O'Mullan (rasharkin), Marty mcCloskey (Dungiven), Martin Johntson (Creggan), Brian Og McGilligan (Dungiven), Tiernan Rafferty (Kilrea), Karl McKaigue (Slaughtneil), Gareth McKinless (Ballinderry), Emmet Bradley (Glen), Denver johnston (Kilrea), Conor McAtamney (Swatragh), Jack Kielt (kirlea), Michael Warnock (glen), Benny Laverty (Cargin), Rory Bradley (Glenullin), Marty Burke (Dungiven)

Maghera were always in control, but Armagh got it back to three at one stage, then Emmet Bradley from afree and a point front Jack Kielt immediately after turned the game back in Maghera's favour and they ran out easy enough winners.

Do us a favour and rewrite them teams with the name of the das in instead. For example, I assume Paul Gunning is Gunner's chap and the two McAtamneys are Noddy's young boys.

Been living away from the area for a fair while and I reckon a lot of the fathers would be of a similar age to myself.

There was a boy in my year at school whose brother was knocked down and killed by a speeding driver within the 30mph limit on the same stretch of road. Had Mr Kenneth Kane been the driver on that occasion would a 1p fine have been a sufficient penalty?
