GAA Discussion / rte balance?
October 09, 2008, 12:26:57 PM
http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/championship// - don't mean to start a big north-south paranoia debate, but I would've thought that the top story on this page should have been Tyrone as All Ireland champs against Armagh, not Dublin-Meath.

GAA Discussion / One for the ladies

Cork belles or re-belles 4 in-a-row is something else, they deserved to win tho Monaghan put up a great show and were closer tha the score suggests. the ref handed cork 2 penos, the second nothing short of ridiculous, and he made stupid calls all through, ruining a great scrap. wee mcanespie on the wing was fab, as was mcconnell number 10, they'll get a few all stars. btw why do ladies players not complain about decisions like the penos? not saying they should, but it's interesting that they don't.

GAA Discussion / Sam on BBC is 'most popular'

Never mind Eamon Holmes, the All Ireland Final is top of the list down the side about most popular TV. If you click the championship logo you can watch the whole show from last Sunday. Didn't know they could do that but fair play cos it's up there with the top shows.

GAA Discussion / Has Kieran Shannon lost it?
August 18, 2008, 03:04:11 PM
Did anyone read the article about Armagh in the Tribune? He tried to make out Armagh were the 'most important and influential' team of the decade, like Cork hurlers. You can't make a case for either (Kerry, Tyrone in football, Kilkenny in hurling) but he tried anyway and came up with some awful rubbish, which is unlike him, to be fair. Like... Armagh only lost the 05 semi to tyrone because of a 'dubious free... for a slight tug on Stevie O'neill's jersey'. Sorry Kieran, but the fact is that Stevie got past Ciaran McKeever and he pulled him back. Free. No question, not dubious at all. Also, like most Dublin journos, they ignored stuff like the Michael Collins 2 reds in the Ulster Final of that year which handed it to Armagh, McGeeney being hauled off by Big Joe in the 05 semi at a crucial time, the Fermanagh defeat, the collapse against Kerry, and now Wexford.

Still on the Tribune, they said in the match ratings that Davy Harte's 1-1 made him the top-scoring half-back in the championship. Aidan Carr has 0-24.

And, Liam Hayes said Sean Cavanagh should have been sent off for his shoulder into Whelan and a yellow just after it. He didn't mention at all the Whelan punch. Sounds to me like the Tribune boys were on the black stuff on Saturday night.

first time i saw that presenter and hopefully the last. cringeworthy. he could at least know his stuff but he said to shane mccabe 'you play a bit of soccer?' mccabe had to explain that he played in the uefa cup recently and he plays for glentoran. after seeing the blank look, he explained that they are a team in belfast. he wasn't much better with landers for the hurling. how did he get to fill in for cahill, is it cos they're all in China?

barney eastwood isn't on it this year, is he? he was there before cos he sponsored it. And he won an all ireland minor medal. someone said joe kernan, do me a favour, tell me the last time he said anything interesting in a public arena, ie, on tv or in the papers. if he were to say things as they really are, then great, but he won't ever spill the beans. dessie farrell - dustin the turkey with the monotonous voice, have you ever heard him on telly or at a gpa 'do'. you must be joking. I think Brennan is a good call cos when do the public ever get the chance to ask the president directly about whatever - DRA, hurling's future, the australian link, etc. And fair play to him for coming to a Down Div 3 club's chat night. As for ross carr, yes he picks his words but he is one of the most genuine gaels there is, his blood is red and black, he speaks a lot of sense and not just nonsense for the sake of it. so sorry but i disagree with the last few posts. I understand some of the points and it seems that there are some grievances with some of the panel but it looks impressive to me.

Who have they got this year on the panel?

armamike, let's follow this on a bit. if the bbc didn't pay for rights and if they were doing all of the Ulster games anyway, then what new money did they bring to gaelic coverage this year?

I mean, they have the cameras at all the ulster games anyway, as in previous years, so there was no change there in cost. they were just allowed to show the pictures live this year but it wasn't costing them any more. in fact it might have been cheaper than a sunday night programme.

and, if they lost the northern ireland football deal to sky, what are they doing with their money? the sunday tribune said a month back when bbc didn't show the down-tyrone replay that the north west 200 cost bbc a quarter of a milion, which was doubled on the years before, so that's where some of it went, but why couldnt some of it pay for the privilege, and it is a privilege, to show the biggest games in ireland. these people have serious questions to answer. one other thing - if sky pulled out suddenly, would the bbc find the money to step in?

the bottom line is this is incredibly insulting to gaelic fans. i cant believe a broadcaster has the chance to do these games and is turning it down. btw the hairy one in the picture is the one who said they had a will to cover the quarter-finals. never seen him near a gaelic match. hollow words.

the bit I don't understand is how this has come to light just before the quarter-finals. did the bbc have the money but have spent it on something else and now don't have it? why didn't they just say earlier that they wouldn't have the money? did they think they'd get it for nowt?! it was the same last yeaer about the radio, blame it on money.
