Title: Losers, chokers underdogs non performers and never won
Post by: seafoid on July 29, 2026, 09:10:35 AM
Andy Moran said they sneered.
Who are the other ones?

Club
County
Other sports

Scottish football is full of them. Hibernian won the Scottish Cup after 104 years

Kobe is going to St Kilda who haven't won since 1966.

Salthill thrashed Corofin in the 1990 county final with a team laden with county players, (not just Galway ones). They looked set to dominate the domestic scene for a good decade. Instead, they lost the following year's final to Corofin after a replay, who would instead go on to be king pins in Galway for many years after. Despite having many strong line-ups on paper, Salthill would lose 7 finals after 1990 and only add on a paltry 2 more. Real underacheivement.

Donaghmore. Shocking championship record at Senior and Intermediate despite being a fairly big club in Tyrone, by that I mean first round exits most years regardless of opponent. Although there is a generation coming that might change that (x3 Tyrone minor championships 2021-2023) and Fergal Logan managing them now. Be an interesting few years coming up for that club

2006 I think? That team contained such as Michael Donnellan, Alan Kerins, Gordon Morley, Maurice Sheridan, none of whom were 'natives'. Given the talent at their disposal, I was astounded they couldn't win it in 1990/91. They walked Galway that year.

2004? Not sure but I've never watched it back! Donnellan was one of the better players that day in a very poor match

More recently the All-Ireland club IFC final

An Ghaeltacht 0-12 Glenullin 0-6 was much worse considering it was played with the new rules.

St Gall won in 2010

Clann na nGael (Ros) lost 5 Club finals
Castlebar Mitchels lost 3

That was before Corofin won, the first Connacht team to win the title.

Club - Ballyboden and or Kilmacud. There is an argument that Ballyboden are Europe's biggest sports club fielding 172 teams and for decades Kilmacud had a whole county to themselves. There are numerous counties fielding less club sides than either. With that volume of players and that level of sponsorship they should be winning everything every year. A very quick back of a fag packet calculation. 3% of the entire playing population of the GAA do so at Ballyboden. 3%.

County - Cork. Massive underachievement for the county with the most payers in both codes.

Other sports - Irish rugby team. Total chokers with delusions of grandeur. A bizarre culture that refuses to call out consistant failure and bizarre ownership structures.

I wouldn't say Loughgiel are chokers. They're the only Ulster club to win the AI. Twice. Maybe Cushendall or Dunloy could be considered chokers. They've both  more Ulsters titles, and Dunloy have 5 AI final appearances but no winners' medals.

I didn't label them chokers. Anyway, it'd be different teams over them years.

I'd be praising teams, like Mayo, whocould as easy gave up but kept going. Loughgiel and teams like them, the same.

The All Blacks won the initial Rugby World Cup in 1995 and lost every time until 2011.
The key was a new manager who changed the way they did things.

It was Steve Hansen

https://i.stuff.co.nz/business/farming/fieldays/69261946/steve-hansen-talks-rugby-at-fieldays8
Planning for "inconvenient facts"  - such as low dairy payouts or unexpected All Black injuries - was vital, Hansen said.

One example was the 2007 World Cup campaign and they'd since learned to consider what could go wrong and have a solution ready.

"We just go to the cupboard and draw that out, and bang," he said.

In 2019 after NZ hammered Ireland Steve Hansen went into the dressing room and told the players that they might have had experience of losing matches at the RWC but that didn't mean they had necessarily learnt anything in the process

Kildare have not won since 1928 and then there was only 3 Leinsters thrown in the last 75 years, but we are not chokers or barely underachivers as we can't even seem to get to that stage!

Mayo were never chokers in my book, in fact they were probably too up for the finals. They feckin needed to calm a bit.

Different sport and maybe I am being harsh but from my memory Contepomi had some abosulte awful days with Leinster.

Kerry are relentless and driven to win. They have a psychological hold over Cork. They beat them in the 2007 and 2009 finals.

The Rugby World Cup quarter final problem is 40 years old

Both Wales and Scotland have won quarter finals. Scotland lucked out playing Samoa.

1987  Beaten by Australia
1991 lost to Campese try lansdowne
1995 outclassed
1999 Argentina in Lens
2003 a small team
2007 a flop. Out . Pipped. Talented players
O'Gara and O'Driscoll.
2011 wrong mindset,  bad defence vs Wales after beating Australia, excess gym work
2015 injuries vs Argentina
2019 Hammered by All Blacks
2023 Beaten by All Blacks

Hate this sort of topic. Every year there are a plethora of underachievers. Most lose early every year and completely avoid scrutiny. Those who try and fail at a higher level naturally face greater scrutiny. Basically trying and in most cases trying harder and failing is mocked.
To be fair it's great fun putting the heal in - in such failures. And most enjoy the drama it brings. Many a sports pundit who have made a good living from ridiculing failures.

Bunker - there was ridicule of Mayo in certain quarters for the AI final losses and it would have hurt deeply. But if the past week has shown us anything then Mayo's story now and in the years ahead will be more likely framed as one of resilience than failure.  To keep coming back every year and going at it again will be the thing that will stick with a lot of people.  Lesser counties would not have dealt with it and responded in the way Mayo did.

They lost in 02,05,08.11,15,19, 23 , 26 (8)

They won't have many hammerings of Mayo in future.

Since the end of Micko's  great team in 1986, Kerry  have won  9 from 40.  And  3 from the last 17.

Dublin have 10 from 40.

The  more AI's  continue to be shared  around the  other  counties, the better.
