Look, forget about the 'No Surrender' during the 'Queen' .. the red, white and blue scarves and banners, the constant chanting of "ULSTER" ... the flying of the Union Flag over the ground as well as the flag of the defunct Northern Ireland State  .. the Our Wee Country ethos .. the hatred, the tattoos, the Village, 'WINDSOR PARK' .. Linfield's home ground! .. etc etc , .. I think that they are a great wee team!

I'd be in agreement with you there. I wouldn't suddenly start supporting them if they stopped with GSTQ.

On the contrary removing the english national anthem would be a small step in reducing nationalist alienation from this team and the IFA, and would reduce its current status as a loyalist icon. If this was followed by a move away from the loyalist village area and transforming the atmosphere to wholly apolitical (ie banning other unionist symbols and emblems etc)
Title: Re: God Save the Queen - No More?
Post by: T Fearon on March 11, 2010, 10:28:03 PM
I for one would concede that the IFA is making genuine efforts to promote soccer on a cross community basis, and if I have occasion to watch this team play, I might even feel a part of it all and it was at least aspiring to represent me.
Title: Re: God Save the Queen - No More?
Post by: GetOffThePitch on March 11, 2010, 10:36:00 PM
But if they remove GSTQ, the flag is still there. SHould that go too? How far do you actually go to 'represent' nationalism before realising an all-ireland team? Personally speaking, I'm more than content with the current setup-i know we've moved on a lot but NOvember 1993 will never leave me in terms of having even a passing affection for Windsor Park
Title: Re: God Save the Queen - No More?
Post by: GetOffThePitch on March 11, 2010, 10:40:37 PM
And by the same token- I wouldn't ask for unionist emblems/flags to be removed. We live in an engineered unionist statelet. This is being eroded by democratic means but I still repect that people need their symbols and cultures- the football team is just one of them

Like it or not, we are stuck in this gerrymandered cesspit and are likely to remain so for some time yet. We now have a form of shared government and an increasing share of everything else, so if the IFA is genuinely interested in promoting soccer here in an equitable manner then it simply must either completely divest its premier events (ie international soccer games) of all their current partisan political trappings, or alternatively have the political trappings of both traditions on display.

Like most people I can see absolutley no sporting reason or logic of having two internationa football teams or indeed two football associations on this island, one team would unite football supporters ina common purpose, reduce tensions and divisions, and help the best players from whatever part of Ireland they come from to develop by playing alongside the best available, as is the case in Rugby Union. But on the supposition that the dissident IFA is not going to aquiesce anytime soon in this regard, then they must ensure a neutral environment in every way, at their premier events

By the same token, supporting the South is accepting the English occupation.

I never understood why N.Ireland payed GSTQ - when Scotland and Wales don't.

I actually would support N.Ireland, i've even been to windsor park on a few ocassions - and i have to say didn't feel intimated and it was all very enjoyable.
Okay they play GSTQ and there is a few unionist symbols about - but nowhere near as strong as it used to be.

Sport and politics should be seperate, so if anyone likes Soccer I see no reason why they should't support their own Area.

The only point i decided i couldn't support them was when they decided you couldn't paly for N.Ireland with an irish passport - which is no longer an issue!

Politics and sport shouldn't mix. But they unavoidably mix. I believe that anyone who is opposed to the existance of the 6 county plastic state and simultaneously supports it's soccer team is being totally hypocritical.

I too have enjoyed many football games at Windsor Park, not least the George Best show in 1967, but I have never ever felt that this was "my team" and have sat in the company of non catholic/non nationalist friends who have visibly cringed at the chants etc.

I take offence at the ludicrous 6 year "Football for All" Campaign run by the IFA, as its actions or inactions have not indicated any genuine attempt to promote football for all. This offence  is compunded even further when its apologists laughingly suggest that other sporting organisations (ie the GAA) "could learn from the success of our campaign"

At the end of the day, if the IFA continues to pander to unionists, then I would have more respect for it if they openly admitted that this was their raison d'etre and the reason why the will not countenance an All Ireland side.

I take no offence at a noun preceding the words "for all" except the noun "Football" in a North of Ireland context. I believe this is a term plagiarised and misused by the IFA to give a false impression that they

1) Understand what it means

2) Make a genuine effort to put it into practice

I think I can safely say that my decades of support (including 20 years as a block booker) of the FAI side has absolutely no endorsement implications on my part, or even hint of same, for British Rule in any part of Ireland. You might as well say that people who elect those who sit in a partitionist parliament in the Dail , support British Rule (hold on, the majority probably do!).

Quite simply, the fact that there is a split in Irish soccer (forced and maintained by the Belfast based IFA) is beyond the FAI's wishes and control, they aspire to represent everyone on the island, so I do not see why Irish nationalists should not support this team with clear consciences.

Saffron you are being overly disingenious here.   Are you then endorsing British rule by holding a passport (either nation's), having a driver's licence (again either nation's) or participating in any way whatsoever in anything which involves either sovereign government?  Tony gets wound up easily enough without actually trying to do it.

What changes are the FAI proposing to put into place to represent everyone on the island, to make me feel welcome they would need to change the anthem (not just augment another one along side the present one) and a flag more representative of both north and south would be appreciated, also would like to seem some safeguard in place that matches be held in both belfast and dublin so that it doesn't become like the rugby.

If the two bodies unite, surely there will no longer be an FAI, or IFA, but an entirely new body with a new name to administer football on an island wide basis. Its not a question of a takeover but an agreed way forward by everyone, based solely on how football can be best promoted.

There isn't a stadium in Belfast fit to host anything presently, if the North of Ireland fans hadn't scuppered the Maze project it would have been half built by now.

I'm sure an agreement can be reached on flags and anthems etc

you think? To be honest as i see it the demonstration of hardline loyalism at Windsor Park has been made taboo, but its still there under the surface.  I think the chances of an all-ireland national side are incredibly minimal.

.......... just like the good job that the IRFU made of the rugby?

Getoffthepitch. The chances are minimal principally due to the politically inspired opposition by the IFA and its monocultural supporters. However the flow of young nationalists to the FAI is already causing rethinks to take place re anthems etc so who knows? Change is happening and at an incredible pace.

Exactlty, the anthem would have to go, the flag would have to change and it could not be allowed to become solely based in dublin, no point swapping one supposed monocultural setup for another.

Could have two anthems for the two communities in the north, if / when the two soccer bodies merge. Londonderry Air for the Protestants and Danny Boy for the Catholics.

I took it to mean that you thought the IRFU hadn't done a good job of respresenting both north and south and i was saying that we should have real changes like the ones i listed so that its truly representative.

:D

Seriously though it would have to be one anthem, not one for us and one for them, not a fudge like the rugby, one anthem something like dannyboy which has no real connations attached to it would be fine.

+1

The anthems issue is a red herring. Fair play to the boys who admit that the IFA could do everything short of disbanding and they still wouldn't cheer for NI. Why should they alienate some of their current supporters to entice people who will never give NI the time of day?

They shouldnt, but should change it for the right reasons.
Id get rid of it as the UK anthem if possible, but failing that from the NI team would be a good start.

Common sense seys (sic) this island is only big enough for one successful league and that the international team would be better off as a single entity.

But feck the wee six and the IFA and the scum they bring with them, is it really worth it. Let them slip into the hole which is fast approaching, no more glory days boys enjoy your outings in the "celtic" cup.

"northern" Ireland soccer team is now only a vehicle to drag out and try and legitimise this fantasy of a state, now highjacked by loyalists to try and prove a culture.

Supporting the six county team is accepting the English occupation of north east Ireland.

An all-ireland team is the only answer.

Erm...what's the question?

Onto the main point...as I've said before many times I'm all for the NI team using a NI-specific anthem.

Look, I think that if the IFA agreed that the NI team would wear green, white and orange shirts, were sponsored by eirigi, played in Crossmaglen, stood to attention to the anthem 'Go on Home British Bastards' by Eire Og, provided half-time entertainment from the Ballymurphy Martyrs Flute Band and each goal was celebrated by the PA system playing "I would rather wear a turban than a sash" (to the tune of 'she'll be coming round the mountain when she comes') then there would still be some on this board that would call them Orange Bastards!

I couldn't give a fiddlers if they did all those things to reach out to nationalists. It's very def not a sectarian reason for saying that as i'm fiercely anti-sectarian. I simply cannot and will not support any team representing a six county state which I am opposed to the very existance of. And on a similar point, since when was this six county plastic state a "nation"? It is not a country and as such it should not have a "national" anthem.

Sorry Olaf, gonna have to call you on this. I had the glorious opportunity of watching NI from the kop. 2 things were notable, first is that there were numerous loyalist anthems being sung around me, by the vast majority- people I would understand others to refer to as 'scumbags'. I can be honest enough to say that i think the lads beside me twigged straight off that i was a taig, and  didnt give me any hassle, but i really did feel very nervous. The second thing I remember is that the ni subs were playing keepy up amongst themselves, and their record was 4... :-\

I cant see why if you want to use the uk anthem you wouldnt want a uk team.
If you want an NI team it should make sense to want a NI anthem imo.

I cant see why if you want to use the uk anthem you wouldnt want a uk team.
If you want an NI team it should make sense to want a NI anthem imo.

Nifan, as a more moderate owc'er what would your choice of alternative anthem be?
I'm genuinely curious.
Also would you have any view on an appropriate flag.

I dont really know, my music tastes are more indie than anthem  :)
Not a real fan of Danny Boy though it has a strong connection with here, so would be more acceptable. Religion and monarchy shouldnt be lauded whatever it is.

As for the flag - im not uncomfortable with the NI flag as it is NI rather than uk (never understood anyone bringing a UJ for the same reason as the anthem), but I understand that some people dont like it. Not sure what should be done there.

Eddy Izzard had a green flag with a white dove on one corner.
Was thinking D:ream - "Things can only get better."   ;)

God no. The last All-Ireland anthem penned by a Derryman was awful ;)
