Just heard on the news, New York Stock Exchange setting up offices in Belfast creating up to 400 jobs. Good news but don't we all hate Bankers?
NYSE creates up to 400 NI jobs
The jobs will be in technical development and support
The New York Stock Exchange plans to create a technology service centre in Belfast, creating up to 400 jobs.
NYSE chief executive Duncan Niederauer announced his plans in Belfast alongside Northern Ireland's First Minister and Deputy First Ministers.
He said the skills base of the region's workforce, and the personal relationship struck up with Stormont leaders lead to the investment.
Recruitment for the posts will take place over the next two years.
They will be mainly technical jobs, based in Belfast city centre.
BBC business reporter Eddie O'Gorman said the project had been in the pipeline "for quite some time".
"The NYSE bought a Belfast software company called Wombat 18 months ago and Invest NI have been talking to them ever since about expanding.
No one should doubt the scale and significance of this expansion which is a major endorsement of our local talent, knowledge and infrastructure
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness
"They did announce more jobs at the time of the investment conference in May 2008 and this is just a further stage in the process," our reporter added.
Invest NI will provide up to £9.6m to support the project.
Lobbying
The total of 400 jobs includes 75 which have previously been announced.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said: "No one should doubt the scale and significance of this expansion which is a major endorsement of our local talent, knowledge and infrastructure.
"It will also send a clear message to other potential investors when such a high profile institution decides to invest here."
First Minister Peter Robinson praised Invest NI's role in attracting the jobs, saying the development comes "at a time when global competition for such investment has never been higher."
Stormont ministers have been lobbying hard in the US for more investment as part of the peace dividend.
Last year industry leaders from 80 US companies attended a conference in Belfast outlining potential investment opportunities.
New York Stock Exchange
Founded by 24 New York city stockbrokers and merchants in 1792
Merged with Paris-based Euronext in 2007
Runs six equity exchanges and eight derivatives exchanges
When US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Northerrn Ireland last week she met business leaders during her series of engagements.
She noted that Northern Ireland had escaped the worst ravages of the global economic downturn and credited the relative success on its educated, highly skilled workforce.
In 2007 New York was the scene for one of the most striking images of the early days of DUP/ Sinn Fein power sharing when then DUP leader and First Minister, Ian Paisley and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness of Sinn Fein were photographed ringing the trading bell at the Nasdaq exchange.
The pair also met Mr Niederauer, during the trip and lobbied him on making an investment in Northern Ireland.
The US-based financial group Citi employs about 800 people in Belfast in a technology service centre.
Great news for the East again.

Indeed. All the job that were supposed to decentralised by Stormont isn't happening now either. Sammy Wilson did a U turn.
I'll expect all the MLAs from this neck of the woods to rally now. Waiting....waiting....waiting.

Such a bit of whinging. I'd say 90% of NI is within 1.5 hours of Belfast but still people want jobs on their doorstep. Why would the NICS spend an absolute fortune of tax-payers money decentralising departments when there is nothing to be gained. If people want a job enough, they'll travel for it. A couple of hours each way is nothing to people in most other countries.

We don't have decent roads. Why the hell should the East have everything? FFS, Tyrone don't even have a hospital anymore!
It was going to cost a fortune to decentralise those jobs and there was no way they could do it in the current climate. If they were moved now people would be whinging about politicians wasting taxpayers money.
The west has suffered more under the executive than under direct rule.
You'd be doing well for a 1.5hr commute form Deryry to belfast
If everything is gonna be put in belfast, the least they can do is build a decent road into the place so it is accessible.
Maybe our MLA's could threaten to pull down power sharing unless London funds a new motorway. isn't that how things work here?

Cos Belfast is there with it's fancy road, rail and air infrastructure (such as it is). And the west smells.
There is already an office there which is expanding.
Why set up a new office elsewhere?

Is there any chance of more major investment banks coming to Belfast in the near future? At the minute Citigroup are the only ones that are really there.

Aughnacloy - Paid for by Irish Gov
Fire and Police Training College, a sweetner deal with the south was it not?
It must be the most governed land mass on the planet.
Too many MLA's, Too many Councillors, yet its still run like a dictatorship, where the media get blasted by MLA's for asking too many questions about Invest NI, transfer test and expenses.
NI would be better off with a couple of direct rule ministers from both countries, who will make some decisions.

Not exactly tough, but if you cannot see that the west has been disenfranchised for many years now in comparison to the east of the 6 counties then you must be blind and or ignorant.
Regarding the NYSE jobs I do agree Belfast was always going to be the viable option for these.

Well they definately couldn't go to Derry, as Magee could't produce enough graduates to sustain an investor of that size.
Magee - the other great success of the executive. Was due to rapid expansion under direct rule. Yet this planned has been scaled back and downsized to leave it much the same. Yet somehow spun the other way by Sinn Fein.
Arlene Foster loves people from Derry who raise questions about investment as much as she likes being questioned on the performance on Invest NI.

In the meantime it will probably be employed to off-set the growing dissillusionment with the Stormont Circus, and dig the local politicos out of the latest hole they have dug for themselves

The Erne Hospital is a PPP scheme as the goverment werent able/where unwilling to completly fund it. The Derry Buncrana Road, do you mean the roundabout and the small bit of road realignment that was mostly funded by a group of developers? The Enniskillen bypass, wont ever happen which i agree with as it wouldnt be value for money. The Dungannon to Ballygawley road is finally a reality 30 years after it should have happened. The Aughnacloy to Derry road if mostly funded by the south and the eu. The Omagh- Enniskillen road isnt happening, it was promised as part of the deal that has left the biggest county in the province without a proper hospital but apart from realignment at Shaneragh it has been mothballed. The Magherafelt bypass has been shelfed. The Derry to Dungiven road has much improved but the promised road from dungiven to the M22 is no nearer to starting 5 years on from when it was announced.
Its not 400 jobs, its a promise to create 400 jobs by the end of a three year span assuming all goes according to plan. We have seen the colour of the public investment monies, we have yet to see the colour of NYSCs. Sure we have seen it all before, and listened to the empty platitudes too often, so dont go counting any Chickens just yet

Heganboy if what you say is true, then there may be cause for celebration, but having seen so many similar announcements which in the end came to naught or much less than expected, i wont be putting the Champagne on Ice just yet. We will have to wait a couple of years before you or i can say with certainty if this one is any different. Meanwhile given the timing and choreography of this announcement, i will maintain a healthy sceptizism, while accepting your expressions of good faith. Hope you are right and i am wrong

Good news this.
You can't expect a contract like this to land in Tyrone or Fermanagh - apart from infrastructure, it needs 400 appropriately skilled workers. There just aren't those numbers in those areas.
As for the public sector jobs, it's a great idea in principle, but if you decentralise a department from Belfast to Tyrone or Derry, you'll have to pay the current employees' travel for the next X years - on top of all the other associated costs. It would cost a fortune.
Sure the pro East on here have said that it would only take 1hr 30 minutes to get from Derry to Belfast. Guess what. It's only 1hr 30 minutes to get from Belfast to Derry too if you take that theory. So build it in Derry, and any skill shortage can be backfilled by commuters from Belfast.
NYSE bosses flying over will not want to fly from NYC to Derry via a Ryanair London flight
I am guessing that the bosses of the NYSE will hardly be surfing budget websites for bargains. I'd suspect they'll have their own private jets and what have you.
You'll find that only the top handful of individuals at NYSE use Private Jets. The management guys that would like visit a software centre in Belfast will not be flying via private jet. Not the main reason for locating in Belfast (it is the sensible option as it is the largest City in NI) but another supporting argument

The west has suffered more under the executive than under direct rule.
Rubbish.
Erne hospital, Derry-Dungiven road, Derry-Buncrana road, Enniskillen bypass, Dungannon to Ballygawley road, Aughnacloy-Derry road, Omagh-Dromore-Irvinstown-Enniskillen road, Magherafelt Bypass, Fire and Police training college in Cookstown...
Aye, times are tough out west.
So what exactly did you get under direct rule?
QuoteYou'll find that only the top handful of individuals at NYSE use Private Jets.
Even at the top i dont believe they use private jets.

You can fool some of the people some of the time etc., this is just another of those headline grabbing announcements, which eventually fail to produce the promised numbers or quality of jobs, and will be forgotten about in a years time, after more serious wastage of public monies by Invest N.I. In the meantime it will probably be employed to off-set the growing dissillusionment with the Stormont Circus, and dig the local politicos out of the latest hole they have dug for themselves
Well Pangurban I think all of what you said goes without saying! We all know the score. Invest NI are clowns who are good for nothing except wasting public money, that's a given. That this was won as a bribe to grease the wheels of another carve up, a given. That the shinners and dupers will be back cap in hand to their masters for another slice of the pie, a given. That they're all f**king useless, a given.
Having said that it is 400 jobs.
Bullshit, if you have no idea what you're talking about- just continue to post bullshit, oh hang on you have that covered, because your information is correct, or not, hang on you have no clue- but sure- hey- go for it...
Want to be specific or you just being a whiny bitch in general? I'm particularly interested in you showing me how well run and efficient Invest NI are with all evidence pointing to the contrary, how our elected representatives are better than useless despite all evidence to the contrary.
Just to clarify, my problem wasn't with NYSE coming to Belfast, it's all investments and Government jobs being centralised in Belfast.
The West has been left behind by direct rule and Stormont.
ziggy, its a tough tough sell. there is huge difficulty in persuading a company to put this amount of money into Ireland for core work. Its a tough sell to get someone to transfer from a wall street office to Belfast and say its a promotion. Belfast however does have many of the amenities that an executive has access to in a new york environment including good schools, colleges, night life, health care, transport etc. This rules out any location thats not a reasonably sized city, and unfortunately, despite my best efforts Ballyhegan was not considered either...

It's difficult. Northern Ireland's economy is over-reliant on the Public Sector for employment. There was no need to have around five Education Boards or four health boards to govern a land area the size of NI. It is difficult to justify locating many of these jobs related to outside investment outside of Belfast. Invest NI, I think, although based in the large office in Bedford Street does allow staff to work from Regional Offices is that is their preferences

I hear what you're saying- but where do you draw the line, if you invest in omagh, then enniskillen wants it too, then toome etc etc, there has to be a viable return on the investment.
Cities acquire these facilities gradually as they expand as a city gets bigger it gets an airport/another hospital/a theatre/ an operahouse/ night clubs/ good restaurants rather than put these amenities in and then the people will come...

I hear ya loud and clear too. But it's near impossible for these towns to expand and compete for the investments when there has been major underdevelopment. For instance, the road infrastructure, rail network and a transport system suitable for the 21st Century. Until the West gets this, we'll always fall behind.
It's no coincidence that Strabane was voted the 'worst' town in the UK a few years ago and one of the worst in Europe and it's the further town away from Belfast.
Should the umempolyment in an area not be looked at?
I don't agree with there not being enough gradutates coming out of Magee to meet demand.
Not everyone in the north west goes to Magee to get thier degree.
If you are about the holylands you will notice a lot from Derry/Donegal/Tyrone/Fermanagh.
It seems that many will need to stay there to get empolyment even though they would perfer to be at home
Sorry lads - Nyse wanted to move increase in belfast, in the setup they already have.
Would you have said no thanks to the jobs unless they are out of belfast?
No surely they should have setup in the outback of Tyrone instead ? A much easier move that for them i'm sure..

:D made me chuckle anyway.
If a company is located in Belfast then it is a location which is central and commutable for almost anyone. This then means the standard of people they get is much higher. If they located in East Tyrone then they wouldn't have as good a skillset available to them.
There may be underinvestment in those areas but you can't blame one Yankee company in Belfast.
I am from a small rural area. It would be difficult for me to get the job I wanted to if I lived there. It's just an unfortunate part of life. There are several people from Tyrone, who live in Tyrone, in the company I work in Belfast.
Now maybe people are right in some regards and the civil service etc should decentralise some jobs to these areas however NYSE are not to blame...

Quit the sensible talk.
No problem with where NYSE sets up.
However InvertNI should be focusing on where the need is greatest - I think.
most will know that I have been on about the US starting to invest in the north and then along the border regions as a sop for jobs at the outset of the British Gov engineering their retreat from the six counties.
This is another example of it folks.
There will be more in advance of the population/voting/majority swing
people's sense of outrage will be dulled by the jobs they will get from the private sector as the public sector work is transferred back over to England!
Hate to say I told you so (jeez starting to sound like Tony!! :o)
This investment came due to NYSE buying Wombat, based in Belfast.
They have been expanding here since that point- this is the culmination of that expansion.
Its very easy to make your claims LB, but i dont see it backed up by what actually happened. Good performance by the established belfast team, cheaper costs etc are more important to the NYSE.

yep
and it continues...
backed up by the efforts of first and second ministers etc and I'd say at the behest of the British Gov !
Just expect to see more of it.
personally, dont know if its jealousy of disbelief that they'd give jobs to the likes of those in belfast - I think theyd be much better served based in or around Dublin !
Better , more and more experienced candidates down here !....and remember I have been making these claims for a good few years now !!
Prior to wombat takeover! In all honesty - people woul dhave to say even then - 'why belfast' !!
But your claims where nothing to do with the takeover of wombat - it was not bought due to any such political machinations, and it has not expanded based on this either.
Not sure it would be better served around dublin.
Many of the jobs are going to be fleshing out the teams in belfast - where all the expertise on most of the software products is. Also the cost of operating in dublin would be significantly higher.
As "for even then "why belfast"" - thats where wombat was based.

no I didnt pinpoint wombat - but I did and have been saying that there was going to be a plethora of us and then british plus EU investment.
wombat was (is) in belfast, but the NYSE could very easily have shipped it to the bigger pool of expertise that is Greater Dublin area.
such work remaining or being set up in belfast will start to raise the profile and skills pool of 'greater' belfast - which is , as I have said - the motivation behind all this.
if it wasnt, whythen stay in belfast. After aquiring wombat, it would be far more cost effective to move the entire operation east !
Eastern europe or india !
But its staying in belfast.
Doesnt prove my case completely, but this is the start of it.
As long as the south gets its share of this , I'll be happy enough.
Border regions like Derry/Donegal, Cavan/Fermanagh, Monaghan/Armagh - but forget about that cesspit of dud-awlk ! :D
Quoteif it wasnt, whythen stay in belfast.
Because the skills of wombat are based predominately in Belfast, and moving these people to Dublin, or to the east is not going to happen.
Just bacause you predicted american investment in NI (not much of a prediction, plenty of investment from american companies has occured in the past) doesnt mean that the next american company who arrives proves your hypothesis.
Im fairly certain you dont really know much about this deal and are just guessing.

oh good Jeezuz !! ::)
if thats your grasp on business then theres no point in anything more.
yep, only belfast has the 'talent' that can perform this work.
a wee hint for you - developers are ten a penny in every country of the world - not just in india !!
Quotea wee hint for you - developers are ten a penny in every country of the world - not just in india !!
There are developers all over who can do the work, but the core knowledge is based in belfast.
You cant expect a new team without training to launch in to development on established software without those with core knowledge - it is difficult enough to expand development teams with new talent without slowing down experienced developers in the training process.
Do you know what software wombat provides, or anything about its development teams?

yes, worked in some of the leading software houses in Dublin and its pretty easy to transfer knowledge, far easier than people like to pretend it is.
Thats why a lot of stuff has been migrated to bangalore and hyperbad etc etc
there would be a slight dip in productivity while transferring 'knowledge' but this is made up for very quickly by any team that gets the development work.
programmers have been trying to kid companies for years. A lot of my good friends who were/are developers would admit this (and have done so).
the work in belfast can easily be taken back to the us or shipped to the east. Economically it woul dbe more viable to do so - thus asking the question why it is based in belfast still. Ergo the reason for keeping it there is more political than economical !!
Again if you dont understand how the big bad world of commericalism, economics or ordinary business is conducted, I'd say then you most def have to be a programmer !!
ten a penny is no fabrication of the truth!
Yes I am a developer.
I find it interesting that you are being condescending to me on the topic of the NYSE investment when it is fairly obvious youve no actual knowledge of whats been going on in the last couple of years there. You are making a lot of assumptions of the reasons why the investment was made without any facts to back it up.

FFS !!
as I said before you just dont know how the business world works!!
any knowledge on wombat etc is not remotely required as its software development.
That is the modern day equivalent of building a house. Many different ways/styles/techniques and materials can be used to do it and there are myriads of people throughout the world who can do it equally as well. Are Irish plasterers better than polish ones? - err no !!
I have outlined my reasons above - there are no good reasons why wombat are not moved out of belfast to a greater pool of progamming talent and/or cheaper programming talent.
99.999% of the time motivation is always money (or driven by it when you scratch the surface)
so to keep the work in belfast flies in the face of current modern industry standard practice !
take off the blinkers!
good lad !!
Quoteas I said before you just dont know how the business world works!!
whatever - as i said you have no idea what the motivations are for NYSE. Your guesses are passed of as facts.
Wombat provided more than just code monkeys as well.
By the way do you accept some devlopment teams are better than others? Or do you think you can just give a task to any team and get the same results?

you are trying to say this is a guess on my part, but compare this instance that stands out like a sore thumb bucking the current industry standard practice trend.
So what I am saying makes business sense.
belfast and indeed the north of Ireland is not a hotbed of software development - lets be honest. Thats why so many of you were and are still down here.
as for the metrics on the efficiency of programming?
thats a whole new ball game. Do you measure it on the completion date achievement, the quality of code based on its efficiency/how many lines it uses/resource usage, or do you measure it on accuracy of objective and the satisfaction on user requirements.
Every team is different, a lot of teams would include 'hackers' .
so if you are measuring - you would have to measure on an individual level !!
Some of my good friends are self confessed 'hackers' and get the job done. Others are relatively well known programming geniuses and sticklers for detail - and are in demand by a lot of diff companies!!
Belfast/the north is not that bad for software devlopment - NYSE, citi, kainos, bt etc
In fact the main "rival" that exists to the wombat software about Ireland/UK is fidessa - with their office in belfast.
Also throw in First Derivatives of Newry as a software company that works in the same sphere.
Quoteas for the metrics on the efficiency of programming?
I was referring more to the measurement of the team - and it is getting the job done.
Look at wombats growth over a 5 year period to the point it was bought.
The Wombat team was very successfull (and this is not just developers) and in a niche market, so a lot of their skills are not easily available elsewhere.

belfast and the north has increased workforce and jobs in this arena recently alright! Still a v small pool though.
It may be a niche right now, but historically these 'niches' dont last long.
