looking back over the two tie's

1st leg

united leading 1-0 away looking good

then on 77mins Neville gave away the free-kick with a needless handball, and Ribery with his tame free-kick made its way through the wall and in via a deflection off Rooney.. lucky??

then Evra was the guilty party, dallying on the ball and allowing Olic to steal in & score in the 92 min... lucky?

then rooney get's injured  ::)

2nd leg

United look to be cruising into the semi-finals as they went 3-0

but the whole mood and shape of the tie was turned when Olic took advantage of poor defending by Carrick

their cause being helped when Rafael was sent off (turning point of the game)

having to take off Rooney for a extra defender

Robben's wonder goal capped a period of pressure but they got few chances in between

in conclusion Bayern got alot of breaks in these ties for them to get through & in IMO 9 times out of 10 united would knock them out without much hassle

but that's football

How is it possible to be SO boring....incredible!

Can you not just accept the fact that united are shite and the coach is a xenophobic lowlife bully?

Who are you quoting ross4life?

I thought United were the better team for 60 minutes out of 180. They were the better team in Munich until about 20 minutes in, and then they were second fiddle for the rest of that game.

I knew United could score enough at Old Trafford, but I also knew Munich would be more of a threat themselves. I didn't see United imploding though. At 3-0 up, that should be game over. But 40 minutes in, and United were either on the back foot, or sitting back themselves. I think the latter initially, and then when Bayern got the goal it became the former.

Rafael's sending off was crucial, but I still think at that stage that Bayern were gaining the upper hand. I agree with Ray Houghton (!) that if united don't concede that Olic goal, and go in up 3-0 at half time, the tie is over.

Rafael's sending off was symptomatic of United's general malaise at that stage I felt.

Dunphy and co afterwards were their usual self when discussing clubs like Liverpool or Man United. They use highly emotive language because they know there's hundreds of thousands of fans of those teams in Ireland.

Their central point gets lost in the hyperbole, but it does remain a truism. Both United and Liverpool are hamstrung by financial issues in what should be profitable businesses, and it's going to leave both of them fighting just to stay competitive.

United's saving grace is that they are starting from a better place that Liverpool in terms of current ability, current manager and current stadium. But their ability is waning. The manager can't last for many more years and the stadium money is paying the Glaziers debt.

it's a shitty situation, and once again Liverpool and United have more in common than anything that differentiates them.

For my money Arsenal are the club best placed to kick on. Wenger might be sticking around waiting for United and Chelsea to blow up. If they do, Arsenal may well be the dominant team for a few years.

Good post.

with the emotion of a defeat in champions league and with all the indicators pointing to a runners up position in league its easy to get caught up in individual moments and hype them to extremes,

Yes Rafael did commit TWO yellow cards offences and so was technically correct to be sent off, but i agree with seanie, two fairly minor yellows and while niave on his part he would have gotten away with it in the vast majority of games i've watched.

But the big thing for me was lack of real substance in midfield, either playmaking or getting about them with real menace.  Fletcher is a decent player, Carrick is decent, Giggs & Scholes are pale shadows of themselves and struggle to get the consistency they once had.  Nani and Valencia look like raw prospects still in need of guiding (would have good hope for valencia though)

berbatov hasn't been as poor as has been cited but still a dissapointment.

Alternatives needed therefore

Goalkeeper - lloris (Lyon)
Centre Mid - Hargreaves (???)
Centre Mid - Arteta (everton)/Joe cole (chelsea)
Winger - di Maria (Benfica)
Striker - Benzema (real)/Krasnic (CSKA)

Good post MaxPower, It has been obvious that United have lacked a playmaker since last seasons Champions League final, but they are few and far between.  Arteta is someone who never crossed my mind, but now you have got me thinking.  He would be a great buy and someone who could be persuaded to move.

Has a United player ever been fairly sent off?

Whatever about the rights and wrongs of Rafaels second yellow - he still only has himself to blame for being in the position where a second yellow would get him the line.
The inexperience/petulance/stupidity of his first yellow is what did the damage. Id have expected him to emerge from the dressing room with stitches after being hit by a flying predator.

as the old saying goes you learn more from defeat (they won but it felt like a defeat)

Rafael is young & will learn i felt he played very well last night until the sending off

i was also well impressed with Gibson,Valencia & Nani

Rooney never looked fully fit but he tried his heart out for 50mins

yet again Evra (needs a rest ) & Carrick were a major disappointments

Rio & vidic restricted bayern to only half chances but for some reason the two goals bayern scored it was carrick doing the defending  ???

I said it before... I think Carrick is over rated and is not Utd midfield player standard. He was very disappointing last night especially for the first goal. I would expect him to be sold in the summer but the fact he is English might keep him there.
