Moyes it is. Solid lad, should be interesting to say the least.

Interesting till January 2014 and they are struggling!!!  Will he get the best out of his protege or will the club sell Wayno?  Can he manage the egos of Evra and Van Persie?  Will he be able to give Howard Webb the same man-love?  So many questions....

RVP ego? think he has shown himself to be the ultimate team player this year.
Moyes is experienced enough dealing with the players, its whether he has the tactical awareness and nous for the CL.

Also be very interesting to see if some of the traits of the 'club' endure, that bit of never giving up and scoring late winners/ equalisers. Here's hoping so.

2 Champions league was a poor enough return, reall,y for all that Premiership dominance
Barca won 4 , AC Milan won 5, Real won 3 and even Liverpool were just one behind Manure

Presumably Liverpool will knock Utd off their "f**king perch" again at some stage

David Moyes? Seriously? He's a decent manager but he has no European experience. Taking Fergie's seat is only going to go wrong for him.

Can't see United being knocked off their perch.  They won't win the league every year, no team can.  But they won't have a fall from grace like Liverpool have.  United are a bigger club and brand than Liverpool ever were and that is the cornerstone of their current and future success.  The one statistic that should be used to measure a managers greatness is the number of trophies he has won.  Sir Alex has won some amount, I imagine he has won more than Paisley and Shankly put together.

I'd have similar fears for him personally.

Where else does he go?

He gets offered one of the top jobs in world football, he is young and ambitious why would he not have a crack at and sure if it doesn't work he could get a job the next day with someone of Everton's standing.

It's Moyes lads. Deal done.

Rooney is out the door too.

Fair play to one of the United lads on this, don't know who it was but somebody called Ferguson leaving ages ago.

The Scot held a meeting with the first-team squad on Wednesday morning before choking up as he addressed the entire staff at the club's Carrington training centre

EXCLUSIVE
By Greg Stobart

Sir Alex Ferguson broke down in tears during an emotional goodbye to Manchester United staff this morning following the announcement of his decision to retire, Goal.com can reveal.

The Scot will step down as United manager at the end of the season following 26 years at Old Trafford during which he won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles.

Ferguson arrived at the club's Carrington training base at 6.50am this morning and made a series of phonecalls amid intense speculation that he was set to quit.

Once the entire first-team squad had arrived for training, Ferguson held an eight-minute meeting with the players and senior staff during where he informed them of his decision.

Sources say the players were "quiet and shocked" as they left the meeting, with some clearly emotional. Ferguson was the last man out of the room and was seen supportively patting assistant manager Mike Phelan on the back.

At 9.20am, around the same time that United made an official announcement on their website, Ferguson went to the main dining hall at Carrington to address the entire staff, from the tea ladies to the coaches.

The atmosphere was described as "pensive" and "sombre". By then, everyone knew what was going on.

During a speech that lasted between eight and 10 minutes, Ferguson choked up and became tearful as he thanked them for their support over the years and spoke of the wonderful support within the "United family".

Ferguson became particularly emotional as he revealed that some people present - particularly technical staff - may lose their jobs as a consequence of his retirement.

After he finished talking, Ferguson received a standing ovation as he shuffled out of the room, still clearly emotional as he brings an end to an extraordinary career at United since he took over from Ron Atkinson in November 1986.

He was scheduled to hold a one-on-one sit-down interview with the club's in-house television station, MUTV, at 10.30am and it was unclear whether he still intends to join the United players at Chester races later today.

Mourinho will take over at United. I have a feeling it will be this year. That's why he said what he said tonight. Fergie will step down suddenly, and nobody will know until it happens. He won't want a big issue like last time.

Well, I was right about the last bit. And it could yet be Mourinho to take over.

If Moyes is offered the job, he'd be insane not to take it. Then again, working at The Pit would do strange things to a man...

Two horse race now, Liverpool fans wouldn't know what that is in fairness, seems the money has stopped for a while. Moyes 2/5 and Jose is 5/2

Did Fat Sam not say something about Alex having a bit of a heart scare and would be stepping down shortly a year or so ago?

Press Association reporting that 'senior sources' have told them that Jose Mourinho will NOT be the next Manchester United manager.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær on Norwegian TV2: "I think I know who they'll hire". Reporter: "Who?" Solskjær: "I won't tell you."

Jose Mourinho will not be Ferguson's successor, senior sources tell me. Moyes clear frontrunner. Story on PA wire. - Martyn Ziegler
