Quote from: Brendan on September 13, 2026, 07:55:47 PMReruns of last years 3 hurling finals except Banagher and Lavey are competing for a higher grade this time. Kick in the teeth for Swatragh after coming so close to beating Kevin Lynches and making it to a Senior final

It's always going to be a mix of these 4 teams in Intermediate and Junior. Unfortunately Eoghan Rua and Na Magha not at this level.

But clubs will hopefully be lobbying the county board over the winter to get back to the old system.

Still haven't found out whose idea it was to change it and why? But, in my opinion, it needs changed.

Any truth in the rumour that if Screen beat Swatragh they can't go forward into Ulster because they've won intermediate in recent years?

Regardless of result Swatragh will represent Derry in Ulster Junior this year.

You can all defend Derry hurling all you want but this is true its nothing short of a pantomime.

harryR

I'm pretty sure years ago Na Magha got into the Ulster junior after Eoghan Rua won it, as Eoghan Rua weren't allowed to compete in it for 3 or 5 years.

Yeah, think it's because Screen won the Ulster Junior championship in 2024.

Brendan

There's a similar situation nearly every year, Banagher we're in the Junior final but ineligible to go into Ulster if they beat Lavey in that final

Outside of senior club football and hurling, the club provincials and AI are all very pantomime with the cooking of the books that go on. Not allowing Screen to go through is a lot fairer than a lot of what goes in junior and intermediate football

harryR

The old hurling format was probably the best. Where Na Magha and Coleraine played each other in the junior final. As these are the only genuine junior clubs

Slaughtneil are the only senior club team in Derry, with Kevin Lynchs not far away

Then the rest are all fairly competitive against each other, and actually make for good games.

The way it is now, Na Magha and Eoghan Rua are entering the championship every year knowing that they are going to be out in a few weeks and have nothing really to play for. Obviously except for when Eoghan Rua won the intermediate title a few years back

Screen winning u14 A last night following on from Ballerin winning A2 the night before. Good to see a couple of new names appear and u16 could be similar from what I've heard

Ballerin would be a new name but wouldn't put Screen in that bracket two years ago they won Under 14a and their b &c teams from memory won their respective championship. For under 16 Magherafelt and Slaughtneil probably the front runners ,Ballinderry & Screen  probably next  up along with  Castledawson and Lisaan

Last good few years have seen Lavey Bellaghy Dungiven and Magherafelt largely dominate  so any change from this be good, but we'll not fall out 🤓

Dawson or Lissan would definitely be a nice change from things

Screen did win A, B and C at under 14 2 years ago - so this years under 16 teams are the same group, beat Slaughtneil in the U14A final. Slaughtneil won the U16 leagues so might be favourites.
Jibbajabba who have you heard saying they will win U16? Their rivals will need something to pin on the dressing room wall come knockout football.

Yeah u14A - in the last 3 finals winning 2024 & 2026
u14AB - won the last 3 championships
u14C - won it in 2024

Hopefully this is the start of this 10 year plan you bunch are all talking about  :P

Lolol no I had just heard Dawson had beat Magherafelt (possibly league) and this coupled with a glance at the scores shows some of the traditional big teams not seemingly as strong meant I was hoping for a newish name. Don't be pinning this anywhere 😄😄

You'd love to know who does the SFC fixtures.
Steelstown vs Kilrea on Thursday,
Nothing Friday
Lavey vs Swatragh on Saturday,
Glenullin vs Slaughtneil 4pm and Bellaghy vs Dungiven 6pm Sunday. All at Owenbeg.

What about:
Saturday 5pm and 7pm for Steelstown/Kilrea and Lavey/Swatragh
Sunday 2pm and 4pm for other two not make sense?

Have they not discovered that players prefer not to play on a Thursday or last thing on a Sunday yet?

If Screen are serious about progressing their senior team, then these teams need to be at the heart of it.

Imagine winning championships at U14A, U14B AND U14C level in 2024. Plus winning A this year. That's mad Ted.

Be interesting to see how that U14 team does this year at U16 level? I presume they have two teams at U16 level this year?
