Anton Tohill back training with the county. Any other new or returning faces?

As well as Anton Tohill being recalled to the squad, I believe that Lavey's Conor Mulholland has joined the squad along with fellow Lavey player Rory McGill. Paddy Tally has introduced a lot of younger players to see how they fit into the Senior set up. This includes two goalkeepers, Louis Regan of Lavey and James Gribbin of Newbridge. The latter's clubmate Callum McGrogan is also in the squad. Apparently, the current large squad will be pruned just prior to the commencement of the League. It would also appear that Emmett Bradley has joined Chrissy McKaigue in the intercounty Retirement saloon! Otherwise most of last year's original panel, including Matthew Downey,have returned.
Selecting Derry's defence in the absence of Chrissy McKaigue, and the injuries to Conor McCloskey and Padraig Mc Grogan will present a huge gap in our well-established defensive system. It would now appear that  Eoin McEvoy will be the lynchpin of the Derry defence, supported by Conor Doherty, Gareth McKinless and Diarmuid Baker. Presumably Donncha Gilmore, Shea Downey  Martin Bradley, Patrick McGurk and now Conor Mulholland will all now be
challenging for the other two vacancies before the injured duo return.

I was very impressed with the Newbridge CHB McMullan [I think], he is quite young I think but thought he would have been worth a look, has great positional sense and composure.

Those two goalkeeper selections would suggest the roaming goalkeeper is here to stay in Derry at least.Shocked Peter Stuart hasn't been asked as he's been the best keeper in Derry club football past few years in my opinion and hasn't got a look in

I was as well. Possibly a bit light at the moment but looked like he'd a decent frame to fill into too. Very composed and a strong runner.

He's with the U20's I believe. Was minor (U17) 3 years ago.

Some selections that are living off their fathers names. There's absolutely no way the Downeys deserve to be involved and Tohill might have the physical attributes but football wise is severely lacking. Derry selections as usual are just about keeping certain clubs happy for a new management team.

I'm not sure anyone is trying to keep St Brigid's in Belfast happy.
I would think the more players that the new management can have a look at before the start of the season the better for putting a final panel together. Would be nice if county teams published training squads or at least gave some information out so supporters aren't relying on conjecture.

Your response suggests you don't have any close involvement with a club. Most clubs would prefer to keep their players with them & not lose them for an entire league campaign. There is little/no benefit of having a squad player train in a county set-up but miss a years football in the process.

Many intermediate/ North Derry clubs would love to get some players around county panels and the players themselves want to be there, need something for the youth to aspire to which kids in North Derry haven't had in a long time now

You would assume that the number of call ups is in relation to trying to play as many in house and challenge games as possible to get used to the new rules with no McKenna Cup. Given this I think this was a good chance to have a look at some of the intermediate and junior clubs, even if just, as Brendan says, to give them a bit of exposure. What good is there in looking at the likes to Tohill again who has been given numerous chances and shown he isnt county standard. Personally I don't think there is anyone not looked at in intermediate or junior who could make the step up, but what would be the harm in having a look at them for a couple of months, expose them to county training and gym work and who knows you might find one or two, and if not then they go back to their clubs in a better place and ready for the season. Instead they seem to have gone down the usual route of certain names and certain clubs.
