The proposed multi-sports project at Cloughey Road, Portaferry was originally costed at £𝟮.𝟮 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻.
We are now being told the estimated cost has ballooned to 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 £𝟲.𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. That is a staggering £𝟰.𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲—and ratepayers deserve to know who is actually scrutinising these figures.
Let's be clear: This is not about denying Portaferry proper sports facilities or singling out any particular sport. I fully support investment in sports and community infrastructure across our borough.
This is about 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆, 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹.
Before another penny of public money is committed, ratepayers need answers:
❓ What caused this project to jump from £2.3m to £6.5m?
❓ Who challenged these revised figures?
❓ Will other vital capital projects across Ards and North Down be delayed or sacrificed to plug the gap?
❓ Are ratepayers going to be left picking up the final bill?
Council cannot simply allow major projects to rise by millions without proper scrutiny. We need full financial accountability before any further money is committed.

Does Peter want to know how we ended up with this?

DEARA had allocated funds for a MUGA (also to facilitate Gaelic Games) for the Ards Peninsula a good few years ago.

Various sites were looked at with the key favourite site being in Kircubbin which no one objected to, but the DUP being the DUP tried to get away with sinking the entire funding into a soccer pitch in Portavogie, nowhere remotely suitable for gaelic games and they knew it.

They went ahead anyway and upgraded the Portavogie soccer clubs grounds (council grounds) on the premise that a separate MUGA would be built to facilitate gaelic games.

After a bit of time and wrangling they came up with this proposal on ground owned by the EA and part of the St Columba's College grounds. (which was originally funded by the three local parishes back when it was originally built)

So suck it up buttercup, it was your own sort who couldn't see by their own noses in the first place.
