According to a recent survey by Collins, colloquialisms are dying out, even the precious Norn Iron spake.  Does no one 'wet the tea' no more, wear 'gutties' to go out runnin, have a 'poke' on a hot day or scratch their 'oxter'.

What favourite wee words do yous 'uns have that no wan outside of dear oul Ulster would have a buck notion what ye is on about, like.

gutties, what about mutton dummies, I must be getting old, I still call them pokes and use the word oxters as well.

blocked pronounced balacked, langers and steam boats, all words for being rather intoxicated

The word 'tarra' or 'tara' for terrible.

I would always use 'gutties'. Never heard of 'poke' til I met the wife. Not many use 'clift' anymore, as in idiot...eg...Hardy is a clift.

Someone should revive Owen Kelly's old column in the IN.

Whats the 'poke' thing about?

Just thought of another - "he's right an' bad."  What? At the same time?

Some great wans on here. I don't recognise some of them and i'm surprised that some are dialect words and not generic.

I'd still use guddies...

I find a lot of words are just pronounced different in lurgan too. For example windies (windows), bords (birds) etc

I think it's guddies too, not gutties.

And I agree re. Lourgan, jab, affice, aff etc. Not to mention 'kibling' for pottering about in the garden etc.
