The US is becoming ungovernable. Both parties are to blame for that.

A celebrity bulls***er hi-jacked the Republican nomination and then bluffed his way into power with nonsense straight from 1930s Germany. 

The protesters are wasting their time and everyone else's. Narcissists aren't for turning, even if their protests rip city centres apart.

The irony of voting to 'make America great again' being the straw that breaks America's back, will be one of those cruel ironies historians love.

Save the protests for when he actually does something objectionable. It won't be a long wait.

much has been made of the migration of "news" to the web—news conveyed via social media, Facebook and Twitter especially, but also through partisan websites that, while devoting little or no resources to fact-based reporting, have followed the Fox News playbook of taking on the appearance of traditional news-gathering operations. While it is true that this can be confusing to some readers, who are led to believe that the sites they rely on for information are honest and objective when, instead, they are designed to throw poisonous content into the news cycle, the actual effect is even more insidious: it has created an equivalence between those ideological sites and traditional journalism


After studying four million election-related tweets created between September 16 and October 21, the University of Southern California computer science professor, Emilio Ferrara, and his colleagues, determined that one in five were generated by bots. And once they were, they were retweeted again and again by actual humans, who sent them ricocheting around the web, especially those that were antagonistic; in earlier work, Ferrara's group found that negative tweets traveled 2.5 times faster than positive ones.  "As a result, [the bots] were able to build significant influence, collecting large numbers of followers and having their tweets retweeted by thousands of humans," and leading to the "spreading of content that is often defamatory or based on unsupported or even false, claims." Ferrara further noted that, "previous studies showed that this systematic bias alters public perception. Specifically, it creates the false impression that there is grassroots, positive, sustained support for a certain candidate."

So should we rely on CNN to educate us as to what's going on?

Thinking more about these protests, it is ironic that the US organised the street protests that contribured to the removal of the democratically elected (but pro-Russian) President in Ukraine.

It is even more ironic that Republicans such as John McCain were heavily involved.

Neither of the Boston bombers was ever in Chechnya, not that that matters a jot. Neither were ever in Afghanistan or Iraq either, though they claimed the attack was revenge for the US being in both countries.

....Since 9/11 we have somehow come to accept the "radicalization" narrative, which basically holds that people become terrorists through a series of consecutive, traceable steps laid out for them by large international Islamic organizations. Reality is messier, and also smaller. First of all, radical beliefs are not a predictor of terrorist behavior: most people who hold radical beliefs never become terrorists, and some terrorists don't hold radical beliefs. Second, this theory ignores the benefits of becoming a terrorist: it's a shortcut to becoming a somebody, to belonging, perhaps even to becoming "great." Look at the people who carried out the terrorist attacks of this past winter in Sydney, Paris, and Copenhagen. What do they have in common with one another and with the Tsarnaev brothers? They come from marginalized immigrant existences. They see a chance not only to become a part of something and become somebody but also a chance to declare war on a great power. And the great power accepts that declaration, which is I think the shortsighted and tragic way in which the war on terror has contributed to the glamorization and aggrandizement of terror itself....

As for the San Bernardino female bomber, she was interviewed 3 times by immigration officials. What more are you advocating to be done?

The 911 bombers were reported to police, for their very odd behaviour, up to a year before 911. But nothing was done.

Easy soundbites about targeting muslims and mexicans are not a real solution. Better intelligence and people doing their jobs might be.

Again, where and when?

Until recently, Syrian refugees underwent an up to two year vetting process before entrance to the US - more resources are being thrown at it to try to speed the process up.

Have liberals and Democrats been objecting to that?
