That's the fixtures up.the left in the new year then. Sunday 3pm games not on tv ::), alongside the Spurs.

*groan* That's what bugs me about the Europa League. It's not that I don't think it's worth winning (it is) or that the opposition are less-than-stellar (bring 'em on), it's the Thursday/Sunday/Thursday/Sunday dance.

Its only worth winning for the carrot thats now in place of a Champions League place? As a competition I think its truly awful...

Liverpool,Napoli,Inter and Roma being favourites to win it with the bookies I'd imagine.

Seriously,  what have Liverpool done this season that would warrant ANYONE sticking a bet on them?

The team just looks sick. No balls, no fight, no cohesiveness,  no creativity,  no confidence,  no clue.

Sky Bet have Liverpool as 10/1 outright favorite.

Brilliant free kick. Right in the top corner. Is that the last of him in the Champions League?

Probably. At least with Liverpool!

Actually had hope after the goal. Skrtel had better movement up front than Mario! The one thing that stood out was that when Liverpool actually go after teams directly they are a threat. Rogers style of passing back.and forth doesn't work when teams just funnel men back.

Rodgers seems to be insisting on this passing game from the back when its patently obvious that his goalkeeper and back four aren't skillful enough to carry it off. The opposition know it and press high up the field and Basel were getting their rewards especially in the first half. The few times they did give it wind up to Lambert and later on with Skrtl the likes of Sterling were getting onto the second ball (breaking ball in GAA parlance) and doing a bit of damage.
Brendan really needs to look at the attributes of his team and come up with a game plan accordingly rather than impose one on them which isn't suited to them.

The passing and pressing game worked brilliamtly last year when he ahd real pace up front with suarez, sterling and sturridge.
He just doesnt have the same pace (or workrate) this year with lambert and ballotelli, so that type of game is a waste of time.
Lambert and ballotelli are the type of strikers that need good service from the wide areas, and liverpool dont really even have any out and out 'wingers'.

Yeah, that's when the opposition have the ball, when Liverpool have the ball is what I'm talking about. If anything Liverpools opponents are using their tactics from last year on them, very successfully.

blewuporstuffed

Even when Liverpool have the ball. Last year they had the threat of players running in behind and playing off the shoulder of the last defender. They kept the ball untill they stretched the opposition a bit and then could get in behind them.
This year that option isnt there.
The strange thing for me is, the one player that is most likely to get down the flanks and get service into the box for lambert and ballotelli, is Moreno and rodgers doesnt seem to want to play him.
Johnson has been piss poor for two seasons now, and Enrique simply isnt good enough

Same boys in general last season were ok at the back with it, and with SG picking it up from deep too. It's the forward threat they are falling down on, too laboured.

Generally Ok, is your memory that bad? A generally OK defence would not have conceded some of the goals they let slip and the PL trophy would be resting on Stevies mantel piece.

The attacking options last year by and large masked this inadequacy but it was always there. Lovren hasn't proved to be the solution either, time will tell on Moreno as I think he's potential, but Brendan needs to sort out the here and now rather than spend biggish on young untried talent.

You aren't comparing the same points here. Yes they conceded goals but they were generally from crosses and set pieces and not from losing the ball passing out from the back, which is well known among liverpool fans and has been a problem for a long time (crosses etc). I am talking about the defence being comfortable on the ball playing the passing game mentioned - which they are. They are just crap when anyone attacks them!!

The whole team is lacking confidence and any sort of fluency and every mistake is being punished. Added to the lack of attacking threat it doesn't make great reading so far.

Has there been a worse Liverpool side than the current one since Shankly took them out of Division 2 fifty years ago?
