Most ATMs hold £10s and £20s. Even taking it as all £20s that's 50,000 notes. A normal ATM does not have the physical capacity hold anymore than 10-15,000 notes. Something smells here...

The BBC is partly to blame as they have a bollix headline, "More than £1m believed to be stolen in ATM theft", not unusual in articles.
Something like "More than £1m believed to be stolen in bank van robbery" is a only a few characters longer and is correct.
