NORM from Cheers.

Last year I bought a signed and personalised photo from George Wendt. I ordered it through the convention company he worked with. Another I bought was the actress from 'Cujo', aka the mother from ET.

A genuine great, broke new ground with Pet Sounds.

Armamike

A musical genius and one of the all time greats.  On a par with Lennon and McCartney.
That's just, like your opinion man.

I'm not buying that

He produced some great stuff but no where near these two

For me, that is

Do you agree on anything?  ;D

Maybe not in terms of the sheer volume of quality material but I'd have him in their company.  He also was a major stimulant for them from the mid 60s onwards.  It's been well documented over the years that they took inspiration from his innovative sounds and that drove them on to Sgt Pepper.   The 60s would have been a very different era without his music.

Brian Wilson an odd one.

I think most of the world (including me) have neither inclination nor opportunity to listen more closely, and therefore learn what it is we seem to have missed out on.

And what I mean there by opportunity, is that if there's something more deeply involving than the godawful tinny California sound of the Beach Boys, then it doesn't seem to be readily available in the public domain.

Yet there are some, indeed many, who put him on the pedestal of greatest musicians of all time.

I don't think this one is a love / hate thing either. I thinks it's more like modern art. You either love it or you ignore it.

Tracks like  in my room, warmth of the sun, Caroline no, were maybe not the first ones that come to mind when people think of the Beach Boys.

It's a shame he lost so much time to mental illness and drugs, but even so he has a seriously impressive body of work. Pet Sounds is one of the all time great, timeless albums. Never gets stale or old. And it written and produced by Wilson  in his early 20s, directing the so-called Wrecking Crew studio group Phil Spector had put together.
Smile is a little more patchy in that there are a couple of weird moments, but the stretch of songs leading into and culminating in Surf's Up is among the most beautiful and melodic music I've personally every heard. Best version is the solo one he released in 2004. Has an alternate lyric version of Good Vibrations too.

Running joke from the music thread about those clamouring for Ocean Colour Scene to be included.
