Us and Donegal would have to be ahead of them given the last results when the teams met. Remains to be seen how Tyrone do but surely the talent is there with them.

Derry have 3 starting players from Slaughtneil. I'm sure Shane, Brendan and Chrissy were consulted about Mark Doran before any approach. He definitely seems to have done a good job with  Slaughtneil in his 2 seasons there so they must be content that he can step up to senior county level as manager. I'd be happy enough with the appointment as long as there's a strong backroom team along with him.

The Longstone man, who won an All-Ireland minor title with Down in 1999, was in charge of Castlewellan for five years before being drafted into Paddy Tally's Mourne County backroom team.

He later went on to work with Colm Collins during the final year of a decade-long stint in charge of the Banner, before spending last year working alongside Oisin McConville in Wicklow.

It is understood Doran had been sounded out about a coaching role with All-Ireland finalists Galway next year, while he was also strongly linked with the Monaghan job, prior to the announcement of Gabriel Bannigan's appointment on Thursday night.

Alongside fellow Down man Jerome Johnston sr, Doran led Ballybay to a first county crown in a decade two years ago, and is believed to have been on a list of preferred candidates to replace Vinny Corey following his shock exit from the Farney job last month,

Instead, though, it is Aughnamullan man Bannigan – uncle of Monaghan player Miceal – who takes up the reins, appointed on a three-year term, with a review after two. His management team includes Mayo legend Andy Moran, former Farney stalwart Damien Freeman and Tyrone native John McElhone

On the presumption that this role is still vacant it would not surprise me if Galway are in discussions with a very high profile former county manager who won an Ulster title a couple of years ago.

Former Cavan midfielder Dermot McCabe looks set to be the next Westmeath football manager, replacing Dessie Dolan.
McCabe's name will go before a Westmeath county board meeting on Tuesday for approval.

The 1997 All-Star was coach to Mickey Graham's Cavan when they won the 2020 Ulster title.

Since then, he has had an involvement with his club Gowna's back-to-back Cavan titles in 2022 and 2023.

McCabe will replace Dessie Dolan who stepped down after two years in charge.

Former Sligo All-Star Eamonn O'Hara says he's open to discussions about becoming Leitrim manager. Would be better fit having  guided Mohill to back-to-back Leitrim SFC titles at the weekend.
