When you think you're fucked you're only about 40% fucked.

If we manage to get in Mkhitaryan and a couple of central defenders it will have been a brilliant Summer's business. Keeping Suarez would be the cherry on the cake although how likely that is I don't know. If Suarez leaves I think we'll need to get another striker in. At least deals are being completed early rather than at the last minute of the transfer window.

We could really do with shifting some of the deadwood / fringe players  at this stage to generate further cash. Surely we could expect to shift at least 4 of the following list -
Coates / Downing / Skrtel  / Spearing / Henderson / Assaidi / Shelvey / Pacheco (hows he still here?)
The time is right for selling Reina as well. His Anfield carreer peaked about 4 years ago & has been on the decline. Id guess John Henry & Co will be mad keen to shift him off the wage bill too.

I would have thought that signing another left back would have been top priority at this stage. Enrique can be hot or cold, and there isn't much competition for his spot.

It's one thing to say we should shift these players out, it is another to have a receptive buyer.  Reina will go as he can't risk sitting on the bench in World Cup year.  At the minute there is himself, Valdes, Cassillas and De Gea for the 3 keeper spots so if he is sitting on the bench then he will not make it.  Also the owners are cutting their cloth a bit shorter in terms of wage bills so he will be forced out.  Henderson is going nowhere as he has forced himself in and finished the season strongly.  He is still young and is a good squad option.   Shelvey in my eyes won't cut it so he should be shifted off to someone for probably around £5m will either a buy back or a sell on clause in case he does the business. Assaidi, Spearing and Pacheco will be gone, the club is taking no major hurt from them financially and will make a few bob in transfers £2-3m each but no more.  Coates, I'm not sure what is best for him.  He has a lot of ability and has the physical attributes to be a top class CB (a bit slow maybe but Carra and Sami were no speed merchants), he just seems to lack the bit of cut that is needed.  Like Henderson he is young and could be worked on.  I would be more inclined to loan him to a Portuguese or Spanish team to let him get game time and then bring him back.  Skrtel will only go if there is a new experienced CB coming in.  The Papa deal seems dead and the Llori deal would be one for the future(he can also play LB so that would give cover/competition for Enrique).  Downing is a problem.  He finished the season reasonably well but he is not good enough to make the step up.  The big issue is that like carroll the club will take a big hit on his fee and also he is on silly money for a player of his ability so there will be very few clubs waiting for his signature.  The only way to shift him is to play the World Cup card with him as well and tell him that he is on the bench and won't be getting regular game time with Aspas and Alberto there now along with the younger players.  Although he is a Boro boy he may be happy to go to Newcastle or somewhere  like that to get regular football.

Aye, hard to disagree with any of that from brokencrossbar1. He'd be drummed out of the Albert after the game pretty sharpish, no fun at all if someone talks sense.

Which one of the four isn't currently looking at CL football unless they move?

Mignolet will be a good buy but he's not coming to sit on the bench. Pepe is gone.

Have to say I thought they looked pretty sharp at the time!  :)

This only became an issue anyway after Ferguson's autobiography four or five years later.

Seems a good price for a lad who has shown flashes of ability but not often enough. Probably a decent player in there somewhere waiting to get out. Might take a while though.
