General discussion / Re: Movie reccomendations

Not exactly a new film but The Jerk is on some of these nights.

Back when Steve Martin was good (The Man with 2 brains, Planes Trains & Automobiles etc). Why does no one stay funny as they get older?

Shithead the dog, Finding out his special purpose, Discovering he is not black. Brilliant.

Giggs was Uniteds only creative spark last night. How will Utd replace him or Scholes in a year or two?

Gibson is not the answer, he has a good strike on him but doesn't really get involved in the overall game.

I'm not convinced Rooney is fit although his off field travails aren't helping.

Having said that Liverpool have went backwards by more than Utd and although they might be hard to break down will offer very little up front based on current form

Colin Murray presents MOTD2 on BBC2 on Sunday nights and presented some of the WC coverage.

Isn't it obvious? He's here already.

Kaizer Sauzee. The gimpish appearance, the inane babble, the ugly henchmen.

It's Enda Kenny. Run!!!!

Expect to find Varadker and Bruton shot on a fishing boat somewhere of the Mayo coast any day now.

General discussion / Re: Roald Dahl - your favourite book

BFG and Danny Champion of the World for me.

Books will stand the test of time for all generations.

Dahl seems to have had an amazing life. Worked for secret services during WWII in America and allegedly slept with every rich woman on the East coast of America.

Invented some kind of tube for brain illnesses and developed his own rehabilitation method for his wife after she had stroke in between writing books.

His granddaughter is a nice piece as an aside.

Was in the Canal Court in Newry on Sunday. Seems to be a sense of quiet optimism round Down for Sunday ( aside from adverts for Sunday night's celebratory disco).

I know my nerves were gone back in 2002 the week before the final but you have to hand it to the Down boys, they are not lacking in confidence. If the players go into the game with this frame of mind and make a good start they have a great chance.

Cork made a great start last year and blew up but they will need to make another good start and learn from their mistakes.

GAA Discussion / Re: Jerome Ousted?
September 11, 2010, 12:47:53 AM
From what I've read of this Jerome Quinn seems to have acted like a big child throughout and he doesn't seem to have much of a case.

Having said that there is undoubtedly a culture of rugby, local soccer, hockey, gaa in that order.

When given licence to they can make good GAA programmes. The championship is good and the Season ticket specials on Oisin McConville and Marty Clarke were well made.

I would imagine in terms of viewing figures the Ulster championship would rank higher than the IFA cup final etc.

Rather than spend money on Irish language programmes that no one watches, they should make a good quality weekly GAA show and buy rights to show all GAA footage of league/championship.

Totally agree about No Country great up to last 15 minutes.

Bit like O Brother, Big Lebowski great up to the end.

Is it Javier Bardem the killer? One bad ass. Scene in the shop with the old boy.....freaky.

Great figure, not special looks wise though.

Still would prefer Carol myself, say she would be a wild thing.

Jeff Stelling isn't as funny without Champagne Charlie, Thommo etc to laugh at his jokes.

Derry might not have the conveyor belt of young players coming through but there is still the nucleus of a decent team with the right man in charge.

The night Fermanagh beat them in Omagh sticks in the memory. Looking at the programme you would have said there was no way Derry could lose but by half time they were rudderless.

Would Malachy O'Rourke be a contender? Was it the Loup he managed before?

Every year there is some story coming out of Derry about some county player getting his jaw broke etc. Mickey Harte seems to have been able to get around the civil war type club football that seemed to exist in Tyrone. Where can Derry find someone to do the same?

Hurling Discussion / Re: All Ireland S.H.C. Final

Great game today. Final scoreline doesn't tell whole story.

Best team won no doubt but despite not being at their best for whatever reason Kilkenny still fought to the end with all the courage they have been associated with over the years.

Although undoubtedly the best hurling team in living memory wll this team be remembered by todays defeat the way Kerry in some respects are for losing in 82?

GAA Discussion / Re: Geezer - one word LEGEND
September 05, 2010, 12:00:37 AM
A bit rich. Look at the hyperbole flying around Marty Clarke. Fabulous player all right but you would think he is going to turn water into wine at the post match banquet the way some go on.

McGeeney is a legend in Armagh and widely respected throughout the country for his drive and professionalism for club, county and country.

It is not about ability, Roy Keane is not among the 10 most talented players at Man Utd in the last 20 years, is he not a legend?

It is not about medals, is Frank McGuigan not a legend in Tyrone, Nudie Hughes in Monaghan.

GAA Discussion / Re: Tyrone & Armagh fans.
September 04, 2010, 11:46:28 PM
Down are in the final on merit and I along with many Armagh fans will be cheering for them ( although a few have got a bit cocky since the semi final win , almost that they didn't believe they could get this far and now that they are in the final the hard work is done).

Hopefully this kind of attitude does not spread to the players but McCartan seems to be keeping them grounded.

Slag away at Armagh. We know we should have won at least 1 more AI but we were consistently among the best teams in the country from 1999 to 2006 having risen from the depths of hammerings by Down and Derry in the early 90s.
