GAA Discussion / Re: Down v Derry 1994

that was a strange year when colman got the road, my own club maybe didn't even vote as they were junior at the time and automatically presumed he be back in, this happened with a few other of the smaller clubs too, the county board was dominated by men from senior clubs, i would have said most of the junior and intermediate clubs were with Colman but many probably didn't even realise what would have happened. We were not far from Ballymaguiagan and most clubs in that area were not happy with it.

That county board back then didn't like Colman getting all the praise, especially as a previous mentioned county board member hit Henry downey down in meath at a challenge game i was at, before the semi against Dublin. The fact that a very good team was flushed down the down didn't worry some of those on the board.

one pet dislike of the whole cup before it starts, i remember back round running round in a pair of red boots playing fullback in my heyday back when we all sensible wore black, had to stand out somehow lol, anyway i went through the 442 magazine world cup preview, out of all the teams previewed with team photos, maybe 20+ teams, not 1 player was actually wearing the old style black boots, we practically got ever colour under the sun all quite loud colours, none co-ordianted with team mates or team colours, its actually quite off putting, time to go retro and bring back the good old standard version, all these boot deals a curse!1

Watching that game now, even 20yrs later that game seemed to have a serious pace to it, no sweepers, 3 man midfielders, defensive half forwards in that game, just ding dust from start to finish. Defenders these days don't realise how lucky they are, they get that much cover that its hard to work out if they are good or just not exposed by a systems of play, McKeever marked the best, man on man relied on this own ability and came out on top many times, defenders of today are not used to be left so exposed these days,

Its not the first time Dublin has had a really good team, Leinster was very competitive back in the Early 90`s and that team got to 3 finals in 4 yrs and could have made it 4 if they had turned Derry over, who`s to say with a bit of luck that that team couldn't have won 3 Ireland's? They had a better defence and midfield that the current Dublin team but lacked 2 serious scoring forwards

A poacher nothing more, not a inch on Van Basten, Ronaldo, Pele, Eusebio, or Zico

mentioned Puskas on the opening post, would have had him in the team as a deep lying midfielder, he on the site as a striker, though my team would been very unbalanced, with the defensive midfielder over run by himself
