I dout it'll come in this game, but I think Cork are on the verge of giving Kerry a good shoeing at some stage.  Kerry are a team on the way down meeting a team on the way up who could be something special, it's coming!

Jesus they gave a hammering in Cork in 2009 in the semi final replay by about 8 points. They gave us a hammering in 2006 in the Munster Final replay by about 6 or so as well. Cork are on the way up alright however this Cork team still is not the finished article (whatever that is). Their defence also has questions marks over it (2-8 vs Waterford) and while the win a load of possession in midfield they don't use it very well. They won the all-ireland last year on place kicking having came through a good few tight games. Their natural leaders are aging (Canty & Murphy) and apart from Sheehan all their forward are markable. Despite this they are the best team left and they should have enough to beat us in Killarney in a tight game.

Attendances at Kerry Cork matches have been steadily declining over the naughties from approx 48K in 2000 to an average of 25 to 30k now. However I feel the trend will be broken this year and a bumper crowd will turn out (especially with the Cork hurlers in a bad place right now). Really looking forward to it after the disappointment of Saturday night.

All is not well in the state of Kerry at present. We have one underage title since 1998 and we have won a minor since 1994. This defeat was expected the margin is what is warring. Kerry have shipped two bad beating at the level in 3 years (1-18 to 0-9 in 2009) yet 9 of last nights team were on the u21 team that gave Cork a hammering last year in Tralee (0-19 to 1-8).

I can't really comment on the match as I was one of the thousand or so fans who were on the Douglas bypass as the game started. It took me 80 minutes to get from the slip road to the ground  We eventually got to the ground 10 minutes into the second half and were asked for full price despite Cork lording it inside!!!!! The good ould grab all association.

In my opinion we have a final shot at Sam this year and after that the future is red.....

Radio Kerry said no penalty.
They reckon that decision swung the match in a very poor game.
Kerry's big problems in midfield and half forward line continue.
We are a team in transition at the moment so this is a good win to keep us out of the relegation dogfight (for now!!!).
Eoin Brosnan did well on him return; David Gaeney looking like a real find for us.
Tough on Mayo though but they had had the indian sign over us in the last few years (in the league at any rate).

Gutting loss really especially themanner of the defeat.
Two very even team with Cork accuracy from dead balls the telling difference.
Another factor was the physicality of the Cork team - they are just so big!!!!.....
We need a free taker; Moran is not the answer - still nothing major lost today but another loss means we are facing a relegation battel.
Mayo away followed by Dublin away next up for us - we need to take something from them games.
As for the sending off I was in the stand today and the general consensus was that Noel O'Leary punched Barry John after/before (depending on who you listen to) Barry Jon head butted O'Leary -> both deserved to go if true (btw I saw the O'Leary punch but not the headbutt!!!!)
Ref was very, very very fussy - games should be left flow where possible however ref now want to blow up for everything.

GAA Discussion / Re: Liam Hayes does it again !

The whole I hate Kerry thing may go back to the late 80's early 90's when Hayes was a GAA correspondent with the Irish Press.
After a bad defeat to Cork I think in 1990 (15 points) Hayes had a go at Jacko saying he was finished and should have quit in 1986.
Jacko didn't particularly like it but he adopted a slightly different approach when responding he didn't review Hayes in doing a player profile of all players on the morning of the 1990 All-Ireland final.
Hayes had another pop at Jacko saying he was overrated; the (great) Kerry team was overrated; team won soft all-Irelands; no great players etc in fact the same shite he is spouting today.
His comments about Moynihan and Cooper in particular are right up there with 'Carlow will win Leinster in two years' statement.
As bad as he is to read he in in fact worse on TV3's coverage.
I like the Tribune as a paper; the only reason they have Hayes is that he must sell papers; controversy sells obviously but there should be no place for the personaliused stuff Hayes revels in.
PS Jack did make a tool of himself with his comments before and after the Down game; we lost heavily and in fairness the Down defenders stopped well before Killian Young got to them. However he was right that the CCCC singled out Kerry for special attention as similar incidents to the two Kerry incidents went unpunished but it was ungracious to bring it up in the post match press conference.

I have to say the constant reference to Kerry getting soft frees in every match we play is annoying; christ do the teams playing Kerry not get any??? I presume people who have no gra for a team see everything in black and white, as I thought Tyrone manufactured loads of frees yesterday especially near the posts.  In respect to the ref yesterday, he did not decide the game, the better side won and 9 points was a more accurate reflection of the difference but if he had not blow for the handpass in the first half and Walsh scored would Down have pushed on like the did? The sending off finished the game as we had too much ground to cover afterwards but honestly we would not have come back anyway as the Down tails were up.

First and foremost congrats to Down on an excellent display we couldn't live with. We got a hiding today (two if you count the minors).

Secondly from a Kerry perspective we handed Down a six point lead and the start the underdogs only dream of. We never reeled in this start.

Third the big calls went against us. The sending off seemed harsh (have not seen it on telly again) and the disallowed goal would have put us in the lead and that may have asked different questions of Down. I accept the Down goal was legit as well and it appeared to be no peno from first viewing either but the game was over when these occurred.

Fourth the future is not bright today, after approx 13 years at or close to the top we will be exiting the stage for a period. It was a privilege following Kerry in those years. I was too young to remember the 1975-86 era but I will talk fondly about 1997-2009. 2002 was the most enjoyable year the football played that year was incredible up to the second half of the final.

Amazing the Indo waited until Thursday to roll out the lazy journalism.

What does a hurling player have to do to get a suspension by the CCCC.
Just watched the Sunday Game and saw the Cork v Antrim game - you can clearly hear Donal Og roaring at the Umpire who was looking at the Antrim lad - he should have walked for that.
Mind you Cadogan may well have started it with a dig to the ribs.
The CCCC will be back on duty Saturday 14:00 to 16:00 only by all accounts.

SDC - from memory - did that 'hiding' not go to ET ?

No Kerry didn't need extra time for that hiding - was looking on-line for a report of the game and came up blank.
The following extract was taken from the League final program of May 4th 1997.

Quarter Final - 6th April at Croke Park - Beat Down 1-18 to 0-10.
Scorers Maurice Fitzgerald 0-9, Pa Laide 1-2, William Kirby 0-3, Dara O Cinneide 0-2, Killian Burns 0-1, Genie Farrell 0-1.
Kerry took some time to hit top form in this game only leading 0-7 to 0-4 at half time. They clicked into gear in the second half to run out decisive winners.
William Kirby and Dara O'Se at midfield and a sparkling Fitzgerald who scored 0-9 were important architects in the success story.

That game may have been Genie Farrells last for Kerry as he got a bad injury just before half time and missed the rest of the year. I don't remember him playing again after this game.

Interestingly a Kerry vocational schools team containing Paul Galvin (corner forward) & Tom O'Sullivan (centre back) beat a Tyrone team containing Stephen O'Neill (wing forward) & Kevin Hughes (corner forward) before the league final.

The teams according to the programme were:
                M. McVeigh
F. Caulfield  C. Deegan  L. Howlett
D. Flynn     S. Ward      R. Carr
      G. McCartan    J. Austin
A. Farrell     J. Treanor   G. Mason
M. Linden    C. McCabe  G. Deegan

                   D. O'Keffe
M. Hassett     B O'Shea     M. O'Shae
S. Moynihan   L. Flaherty    K. Burns
         D. O'Se          W. Kirby
P. Laide         L. Hassett     D. O'Dwyer
G. Farrell        D. O'Cinneide M. Fitzgerald

Not much expected from the minors on saturday. They are without their best defender and best forward.
We should have won the Munster final but in truth it was a terrible game in windy conditions.
Kerry are a small but skillful side which could perform well in Croke Park but in all honesty we will be travelling in hope rather than expectation.
Like the seniors, the minors have never lost a QF included in this was a QF win over an unbeatable Tyrone side in '07.

No it wasn't the worst one ever; the year before we lost by 15 points to Cork.
If my memory serves me right we hit the crossbar twice in the first half and Down missed a pen.
Was in Croke Park that day and I think it was level with about 7 mins left when Down got their second goal. Kerry hit the upright twice with the scores level.
Not much in it if I recall. Connie Murphy started in the corner and he shouldn't as he went over on his ankle the previous thursday night. He was the specialist man marker and was to mark Mickey Linden.
Liam Flaherty also made his debut that yeat but missed the semi final through injury.

The last time I saw Kerry & Down in Croke Park was a league QF in 1997 when Kerry gave down a hiding.
Kirby was unreal that day as was Maurice Fitz. We won the double that year.
It wasn't a great side either but by god was that AI win celebrated.
Incidentaly that QF was the first time I saw the Kerry seniors win in Croke Park!!!

GAA Discussion / Re: Limerick V Cork
July 25, 2010, 01:05:15 PM
1. The better team won; Cork have better footballers and should have the game closed out well before the penalty. Limerick did not play as well as they did in the Munster final.
2. I hope Mr Hughes doesn't get a game again this summer after the decision on the penalty in the first half, to give a free out was criminal; I just don't rate him as a ref, he is frustrating at a game, he is likely to let an elbow to the face go then give a free for someone brining the ball two inces forward.
3. The game was awful, actually the three game were muck yesterday but Limerick v Cork kept the interest until the end due to the score.
4. Write Cork off at your peril remember '09 (Kerry v Longford; Sligo & Antrim) '08 Tyrone v Mayo; '07 Kerry v Monaghan; '06 Kerry v Cork Munsfer final replay. The object of these game is to get through them, Cork are in the hat tomorrow and I do not want to draw them.
5. I have to agree with Kerry Mike - the CCCC should be reviewing the game; some of the Cork hits were high to me - especially one from Nicholas Murphy but if a head butt and a hurley to the 'lower regions' were not reviewed last week them Cork have nothing to fear.

Roll on next weekend....

Want to avoid Cork; don't care after that.
With the injuries and suspensions the QF will be tough.
However as we have the greatest distance to travel to Dublin no doubt they will put us on Bank Holiday Monday again.

More lazy journalism by the best in the business the Indo.
Take the stats from the provincial finals and draw sweeping conclusions based on the raw stats while ignoring all other factors.
There was a gale blowing in the Munster final; both teams had to work the ball up the field using hand-passing against the gale however the paper declared Kerry the hand pass kings.......
Why anyone reads the stuff they put out is beyond me......
