Local GAA Discussion / Re: Fermanagh Football & Hurling
October 23, 2013, 06:51:55 PM
County manager situation a mess, nobody coming out well from this. Dangerous vacuum being left filled with anger, resentment and retirements. Players best to keep their thoughts to themselves too, lot of mud being slung on Twitter from all angles.
Anyway, back to on-field matters, Roslea's chances of run in Ulster have been boosted with two Quigley's back.
Both players' appeals against straight red cards in league match were successful so they are free to face Ballinagh of Cavan.

Afraid not, far too much secrecy surrounding the whole affair.
All we know is who is out of the running - Peter McGinnity, Seamus McEnaney and Rory Gallagher at least. Canavan even said he would still be there in an ideal world (if conditions were met) so I'm not at all hopeful for 2014.
Ryan McCluskey posted an anonymous quote on the matter recently on Twitter: "if it costs so much to run the county team, he would be happy enough to see Fermanagh in division four of the national league, indefinitely". Not sure who is being quoted but given anger of players at the minute they seem to think that is the attitude of the county board.
It's a bit of a mess and I think it will get a lot worse before it gets better.
Could be a winter of retirements, mediation and boycotts. Again.

Didn't see Roslea game but shame if both Quigley's are suspended for Ulster club now. I'm sure they are appealing it but top rated ref in county unlikely to have his decisions overturned.
Pity also to see Shane Lyons and Niall Bogue retire from inter-county action. Both gave an awful lot down the years with serious work commitments to juggle. They didn't get attention or awards Marty McGrath got but gave their all for almost as long. Gonna be a lot of holes to fill for new manager next year. Can't buy that type of experience.

GAA Discussion / Marty McGrath
October 10, 2013, 06:13:20 PM
Thought this deserved a thread of his own.
All the best in retirement to Marty McGrath, on his day one of Fermanagh's finest ever players and one of the best in the country.
He gave his all for the county, quite often playing through the pain barrier, and his commitment could never be questioned.
He went through an awful lot in his 14 years at inter-county level on and off pitch and gave Fermanagh fans their greatest ever days.
He reached the All-Ireland quarter-final in 2003, the All-Ireland semi-final and replay in 20-04 and an Ulster final and replay in 2008.
He won an All-Star in 2004 (one of three Fermanagh players ever to win one with Peter McGinnity and Barry Owens) and was voted Ulster Player of the Year twice in 2004 and 2008. He also represented Ireland on International Rules duty.
In 2006 he underwent two heart procedures inside six months to correct a heart defect. In 2007 he fractured his skull after being hit on the head with the bucket of a JCB digger.
In 2008 he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and actually put treatment on hold due to Fermanagh's run to the Ulster final that year.
Last year his brother-in-law Brian Og Maguire was killed in a workplace accident and Marty soldiered on deciding to give it his all for one more year after what had happened but there was no fairytale ending.
The man certainly deserves his rest, and he deserves to be remembered as a Fermanagh legend.

Have to agree, see the Derry Cavan game as very 50/50. Thought home advantage may swing it Derry's way but PJ McCloskey's injury may be the difference. He has been their best player this year and it's no coincidence he missed the first game against Down when they lost and returned for the game they won.

If you think the referee had a decent game then you're blind, blinkered or ignorant.
He has been criticised in every newspaper report I've seen today.
Dunno what kick to the head you're referring to or if it ever happened, I doubt it was anything intentional.
Anyway, just wanted to put Fermanagh view on record.
Good luck to 'ye'

Good assessment of ref on another thread from neutral fan:

BTW - the referee Duffy was diabolical. He completely destroyed the game from start to finish - never saw worse at an inter-county game. Sent off 3 players & booked dozens in a game that hardly saw a decent hit apart from a half-time spat of handbagging. Blew the whistle far too often for petty things and missed the big calls.
We have said it before but something must be done about the standard of refereeing or the stands will be empty.

He did not jump on him with two knees.
Fermanagh player then won that throw up but was holding player off with other arm, it was another very soft call that went the way of the home team, as did dozens on the day.
That Fermanagh team have not been involved in anything like a dirty game all year except the other time we were in Breffni Park in the League.
The only other game I've seen this year in Breffni was Monaghan Cavan in NFL and that was even worse, four or five off I can't remember exactly.

Some nonsense talked on here. Myles, the first half of that post is spot on but you lost it a bit thereafter.
Hyland has midas touch and Canavan has only brought indiscipline to Fermanagh? Any chance of perspective?
Fermanagh are in a much better place than they were after the John O'Neill era - trounced by Derry and London.
As far as I can see Fermanagh and Cavan set up fairly similar with Cavan having the benefit of having better players - simple as that. Fermanagh don't have a forward in the class of Eugene Keating or a finisher like Dunne. Nor do they have a quality link man like Mackey who can do it all in both halves of the pitch. It's incredible how deep he actually plays, very like Mark McHugh.
Cavan weren't sweetness and light either on Saturday, they took every opportunity they could to slabber in Quigley's ear (chb especially) and it probably worked, though to call that a thump on Mackey is stretching it.
Michael Duffy was absolutely shocking by the way. If i didn't know better i'd have said he was biased.
After moving every Cavan free forward (correctly) for delaying the freetaker or obstruction a Cavan player then lay on ball when a free was given against him. When Fermanagh player tried to drag him off the ball he overturned the free, handed the ball to the Cavan player and, as usual, brought the ball 10 yards forward for Cavan leaving it a tapover. Duffy did everything bar actually tap the f**king thing over himself.
Fermanagh did lose the head, gave away a number of silly frees and McCabe can't complain about second yellow but to be honest I can't complain about the team's discipline because I had totally lost the head even watching that excuse for a referee. Denied a clear penalty on Quigley just before the break too when he blazed over as he was being dragged back.
For all that, Cavan have beaten us in three SFC games in just over a year. They are a better team with better players, end of story.

FERMANAGH TEAM: Chris Snow, Ederney St Josephs John Woods, Lisnaskea Barry Owens, Teemore Damien Kelly, Tempo Declan McCusker, Ederney  St Josephs Ryan McCluskey (Capt), Enniskillen Gaels Marty O'Brien, Devenish James Sherry, Roslea Marty McGrath, Ederney St Josephs Conor Quigley, Roslea Shane McCabe, Belcoo Ryan Jones, Derrygonnelly Paul Ward, Derrygonnelly Sean Quigley, Roslea Tomas Corrigan, Kinawley

Looks a good Fermanagh side on paper. Great spine with Owens, McCluskey, Sherry, McGrath, McCabe and then Sean Quigley through middle. Could be good day for him, I expect lot of frees and he could cash in. Three Ederney men on team, probably a first. Snow must be impressing in training to keep out Breen in goals. We should get better of them in middle, we did in League game and that was when McKiernan was fit for Cavan. Could rival last week in Casement for quality of game but, all in, I'm quietly confident.

Bit of a frustrating night on Saturday, Quigley's absence was really felt. Ward and Cecil both had a few bad efforts from frees, Kille in particular after coming on mostly for that job. Missed first one and never looked like converting another after that. Encouraging though that we were well in the game and probably deserved a point despite the fact we are missing quite a few frontliners. Owens, McCluskey and a few Quigleys would really help.
Annoying that after all these years we're still talking about freetaking costing us games.
Truth is they had good bit more quality in the forward line and when Marty went off they dominated the midfield for last 10. Good to see Marty back in the middle and playing well but worrying how it worked out when he left. Finlay has the sweetest left boot I've seen, scored a few gorgeous points.
All in all, not a bad display and still in the shake up near the top. Away to Meath next week will determine whether we spend the next month looking at the teams ahead of us or those nearer the bottom behind us. They are simply bound to improve and a win on Sunday will have given them a boost. Good to see how we respond plus Owens and McCluskey must be getting close to full fitness.

Believe it or not, she was on the pitch to promote a charity skydive she is doing later in the year.

Can't say I've ever seen the Cullens play. They must be rated very highly to be invited to that training camp? How good are they or are they county material yet?
Division Three going very well but I'd still be cautious, surviving in this division will be a good result. Few tough games to come, things could still go either way.

Delighted for Donegal, Murphy, McGee especially good.
McGuinness press conference just started, journalists tweeting saying he insisted that Declan Bogue (This is Our Year) leave the room before he began. Said he published "untruths".
