GAA Discussion / Re: Armagh v Tyrone U20
June 16, 2018, 12:26:22 PM
I haven't seen anyone from Tyrone say they were in the right. Tyrone got 7 suspensions according to Teamtalk yesterday. If Tyrone had hung on they'd have had 7 players missing from the final.

There was 2.5 minutes of 3 extra minutes played when Armagh scored the point that was a half chance for a goal. I think most people assumed the ref would blow the game up from the kick out and Armagh's last chance had gone. That's when the row started. Armagh were certainly alot quicker into the row with their subs and management. Tyrone played their part no doubt but the fear of missing a final was playing a bit more on Tyrone minds than Armagh at that stage.

Is it true that Tyrone Under 20s were training last night admist an appeal that has been launched against the semi final result???

Well I was talking to two of the team last night so they weren't training but I have heard more talk of an appeal.

During the hurling before the football 4 guards approached another Tyrone fan on a different part of the terrace where he was obstructing no one and asked him to roll up his flag which he did. The first guard there was standing behind me for a couple of minutes before they moved in and he was clearly under orders from more senior officers over the radio. He didn't appear too keen on having to get involved

How many subs did Armagh have? Looks like they had far too many togged out?

Both teams could only use 24 players but they'd all their full panel stripped out. As soon as the schmozzle started the Amragh bench were out of the stand straight onto the field, the Tyrone lads in comparison, a point up well into in injury time in an Ulster semi-final weren't anywhere near as quick out. They had to in the end because their team mates on the field had the gut of 40 Armagh subs and mentors tearing into them

The Armagh 7 had wrestled Jude Campbell to the ground after Armagh had missed a goal chance that looked like their last attack. Campbell got up and knocked him to the ground. Melee ensued.

Who is the Armagh manager?

Martin is assistant. Peter McDonnell manager

I think he was ex Armagh player Martin McQullan
The bald/shaven head one hit our no.17 who then didn’t kick a ball after that assault. Referee/Linesman caught it because he was sent off along with 2 players from each team.

Looking at the positives, I thought Benny Gallen’s Kickouts were top drawer. Kennedy looked good in glimpses probably needs to grab hold of a game more but he has it in him. Young Donaghy from Edendork was excellent stepping up to kick a great equalising point at the end of normal time.

A thoroughly enjoyable game even if we were on the wrong end of the result. I'd expect a few more suspensions to follow. What happened at the end of the first period of extra time has no place on any football field. I'm not sure were the ref found the added time at after the row but fair play to Armagh they tool advantage.

You can't fault the effort of the Tyrone players although in comparison to Armagh they were a bit physically light. Given than that was young Kennedy's first game in 7 or 8 weeks he did fairly well to last as long as he did. Donaghy and McNabb were the pick of the forwards.

Presumably this is the clip in question? - https://youtu.be/DMgl0MlgB3c

Remember being in Newry that night. There were a right few of that Tyrone team won the All Ireland U21 in 2012. From memory Mark Bradley and Sean Hackett were excellent that whole year. There's a 30 for 30 in there somewhere. Without looking too closely Bradley, Kieran McGeary, Padraig Hampsey, Rory Brennan and Michael Cassidy are in the senior squad now. Probably more

Dates for fixtures for this Weekend have changed again, with games on Friday and Saturday now.
Anyone got the inside information on this change?
Near impossible to plan a weekend with dates constantly changing.

I haven't heard any confirmation but I imagine it's to ensure that the clubs with U20 players have them available with their Ulster semi final on Friday week.

U20 Team v Monaghan:

1. Benny Gallen;Aghyaran
2. Antoin Cox, Loughmacrory
3. Connor Quinn, Galbally
4. Peadar Mullan; Tattyreagh
5. Conal Grimes, Loughmacrory
6. Ryan McCusker, Dromore
7. Cahir Goodwin; Dromore
8. Ruairi Gormley, Strabane
9. Brian Kennedy; Derrylaughan
10. Conor Shields, Clogher
11. Emmett McNabb, Dromore
12. Ryan Gray; Trillick
13. Tiarnan Drayne, Donaghmore
14. Mattie McGleenan, Eglish
15. Paul Donaghy, Edendork

Quite a few names i have never heard of here.  Who would the main players be?  A bit  surprised no Carrickmore players on considering the won the minor double for this particular group of players.

Well to quote Dermot Carlin who is part of the management team from an interview he did with Paddy Hunter on for the Ulster Herald the players he mentioned in order were Kennedy, Donaghy, Quinn, Gallen and McNabb.

The only one I haven't seen play this year was Donaghy. What I've seen of the others they looked the part playing senior football with their clubs.

If they can get over tonight they'll not be too far away when silverware is handed out

At a guess LCC Group in Cookstown going by that hint? Turnover of the guts of £600m. Could probably afford it...

General discussion / Re: Paddy Jackson apology
April 17, 2018, 11:06:50 PM
There are a couple of things have been eating away at me for a few days.

The first one is that if this trial had involved two Leinster or Munster players and we had the same trial outcome in Dublin or Limerick, with the case heard in camera, the public would be none the wiser and you can be sure they would have resumed their careers with barely a word said. This case has certainly made me wonder about sports stars unexplained absences or injuries that last longer than they seemingly should!

The other thing that was eating at me was the incident involving two very high profile Munster players a couple of years ago that saw a video emerge before the story (and video) was buried and the incident swept under the carpet. The same players are lauded now and their morals haven't been discussed or called into question. There was no hint that their activities on the night in question were anything other than consensual I should add.

I always though that if Ronan Clarke had stayed fit he would have had some career. Every bit Sean Cavanagh's equal when they played on the same MacRory team at St Pat's Armagh, great start to his career and then it kind of petered out due to injury.

I see that after the first count it was Jordan 46, Kerr 50, Harvey 54. Kerr got in on the seconds. That's 150 voting. Who the hell was all voting?

Many individuals at that County Convention who had never been near one before in their lives. Orchestrated by Harvey & Benny Hurl. They were all left gobsmacked when the result was announced after which many of them left, seemingly only there to vote as part of the coup.

Attendance was up probably because there was going to be a vote of significance on the night. Only stands to reason- clubs would want to have their say and have their vote maximised.

Given that the last vote on the night saw 140 votes cast (84-76 for Donal Magee as Cultural Officer) there were 10 left. There was a couple from Eglish went (there to vote for Roisin Jordan I'm sure) and all the delegates from one club I'm led to believe would have voted for the new chairperson. I didn't see too many more going. Given that it was nearly 11 o'clock on a Tuesday night I'm sure there were people had to get up for work on Wednesday morning and they were keen to get to their beds.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information but it's sensationalist at best...

I'd heard about the Underage restructuring proposals but hadn't really thought about them before the meeting last night - probably because I couldn't see it getting the level of support it got. Having had time to reflect there are a few issues I'd have with this. Constructive criticism if you want.

If the reason for this restructuring is to hold on to players then I don't think it's going to have any effect. Having coached from U10 through to minor with my own club I can see why going to school years might work with primary school pupils in terms of retaining players, however once players get past 13 or 14 there are very few (if any) lost because they can't play with their school age friends. From my own experience once lads get to 13 or 14 their choice of friends is usually based around mutual interests not who was in a class with them at school. I know from within my own club these friendships are across schools and school years.

The upper end of the spectrum where there is an issue with player retention, I can't see how extending things by 6 months is going to make any meaningful difference. Players are lost at 18 because they leave the area for University, develop other interests (positive or otherwise) or they realise that sitting in the house after a days work is much easier than building their lives around playing football. I don't think the extra 6 months will make much difference if I'm honest. I may be wrong, but we'll see.

The other thing that bugged me was the 'bad birthday' argument which I have to say caused my blood pressure to rise just a little. In the instance were there's a child with an October-December birthday at the moment they at least have school football to give them the opportunity to be the oldest player on the team. Under these proposals a child born in May or June may be giving away nearly a year to a player born in July, not just at school level but also at club level. Where there was some balancing with schools football that, under these proposals will now be removed.

In reality all the old issues with birthdays are just shifted 6 months and the balancing act that school football provided would be removed. Under the proposals a 4th year born in June would be asked to play against an 7th year born in July. 4 years difference same as previous.

To be honest I think we're trying to fix an issue that's not really an issue at U14-18. A far greater problem at the minute is U16 football being run off in 3 weeks during the busiest holiday period of the year. I think the proposal to run all youth competitions concurrently over 6 months is worthy of far more comment and discussion and would give far greater benefits to football in the county that moving to half year grades. Unfortunately the ego of club managers and coaches won't allow for it to be countenanced. Better organisation and planning within clubs seems to be something that some clubs don't even want to consider

What sort of u 20 team have we next year
Who is over them
When does it take place
Logan has stepped down and no word on a replacement. Apparently the plan is for the U20s to play before the Senior team next year with any U20 on the senior team becoming ineligble then for the Under 20s.
At Minor level in 2016 they were very dissapointing and were well beaten by Derry in the championship 1-15 to 0-09.
With Benny Gallen, Peter Og McCartan and Emmet McNabb they have 3 excellent players but wouldn't just be too sure of the rest of that team and the progress they have made since.
The 2016 Minor team that is now the Under 20 in 2018 lined out like this.
Benny Gallen (0-1, 1f); Tiarnan Hurl, Eoin Donnelly, James McGurk; Tiernan Corr, Conall Grimes, Peter Og McCartan; James Devlin (0-1), Cahir Goodwin; Branan Molloy, Tomas Carney (0-2, 1f), Paul Donaghy; Emmet McNabb (0-2, 1f), Matthew McGleenan (0-2), Daniel Kerr (0-2). (Subs) Damien McGuigan for J McGurk (blood sub); Oran Sludden for B Molloy; Brian McNulty for E Donnelly; Ryan Gray for C Goodwin.
This years minors were also beaten by Derry but gave a much better account of themselves against a team that went all the way to All Ireland minor final.
The Under 17s are probably too young to make a massive impact but would atleast expect Darragh Canavan to have a reasonable role from that team.

I'm nearly sure that Minor team two years ago won the Ulster Minor league which would suggest they wouldn't be as bad as the result against Derry championship would suggest. Of the lads who didn't feature that day and those who did Brian Kennedy would certainly feature around the middle. He missed nearly all of 2016 after shoulder surgery, but was excellent any time I saw him with Derrylaughan this year. Ryan Gray looked fairly useful with Trillick this year as well. Might be a bit early to expect the U17s to compete but I'd expect some them to be around the panel, if only to keep them involved with the S&C work they'll be getting.

The one lad who you would have expected to kick on was James Devlin. He was the captain of that team and had captained Moortown to win a Minor championship as an U16. I don't think he's even featured with Moortown seniors yet. I could be wrong.
