Quote from: Armagh18 on June 27, 2026, 12:17:08 AMJust me or are people getting stupider? Seen a post about the hottest temperature ever being recorded in 1887, the usual brainiacs are accepting this as evidence that climate change isn't real...
They aren't getting stupider. Social media has just allowed dummies to meet up and reinforce their ignorance.

I genuinely think an outright ban on social media is for the betterment of society.

Lost the phone couple of weeks ago, been the best 2 weeks, with only 4 numbers on the new temp phone and no data its a  huge drop on social media bar me using the laptop, when I have it, its less accessible (some here probably would like me to have a complete miss of it ;D  )

That being said, for work purposes its been a drawback on certain things work related and required!
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

Before social media these people would have been the person in the corner of the pub ranting absolute nonsense. Nobody paid any heed. Now all those eejits have a direct line to each other.

People who don't understand what a trend or a single point of data mean should be nowhere near this discussion.

But you could also argue with the pub bore. Maybe land a fact or two. The bubble aspect means they are reinforced in their ignorance.

I read a fascinating book about the psychology of conspiracy theories. He argued that if you believed something mad you had to go to a specific bookshop in a specific city on the third Thursday of the month at 11.30 to meet your fellow believers. Now you meet on Facebook and crucially it allows other theories to join in.

Long story short, the day of a normally rational person with one mad idea is gone. It's now all or nothing, if you believe climate change is a hoax, you will likely believe Covid was, and then the great replacement theory and on and on. Suddenly you are entirely outside normal society.

Really good read. Questioning orthadoxy is a vital human survival tool (are you sure we can eat these berries) and some madcapped conspiracy theories were in fact 100% true (mk ultra, the cia selling crack to fund illegal wars), but when you get to lizard Jews it becomes outright dangerous. Most conspiracy nuts started out with good intentions in a quest for knowledge.. Lots of nuance here.
