Surely they realise they're being caught on camera,half them will be killed when they land home for the weekend. From the footage I've seen most of them are just standing around though and not doing a lot. One resident said the police were heavy handed. Why did the riot police move into the area in the 1st place? Had there been trouble? At what point was the car with the Dublin reg burned out?

I wondered when this one would be rolled out.

I took from what they said that the quote came from a non student resident which suprised me. Could have picked it up wrong.

Do the universities actually atke any action or do they just talk about it for appearances sake to the media? There are some gypsies in the Holylands by the looks of it. Its good to see our learning institutions are swelled by so many fine young men...........Who said any arsehole can get into a university these days???

No they often try to take action and on many occasions go to far, attempting to suspend students on unsubstantiated reports by single residents for example,  I have represented a number of students over the last few years who didnt deserve to be called up by the universities and a few who did.  Im all for suspensions for those responsible for bringing the universities into disrepute but some form of due process has to take place.

The best punishment is a conviction for criminal damage etc. Will look lovely for any would be solicitor, accountant or doctor.

Police should get in and kick some sense into them. When they get home, so should their family. Disgraceful behaviour! Not something the St. Patrick's Day celebrations should be associated with.

I dont know how anyone in this country could condone this sort of action from the police.

1. Install CCTV in that area.

2. Go through it with a fine tooth comb after such incidents.

3. Anyone caught commiting any offence should be fined and suspended from Uni with a guaranteed bad reference

19 arrests and more to follow when the cameras are examined. This carry on every year has to be stopped.

Thought something like thsi might happen. Was through Agincourt Avenue at about half 1 yesterday dropping something off at my sister's house and the place was madness - far worse than I'd seen it before and that was early in the afternoon. Now obviously students are the major factor int he rpoblem but one issue on St Patrick's Day is always the amount of ones that come up for the day from home and really don't give a damn about anything (including often their mate's house that they're staying in).

As David pointed out, the problem with the Universities is that after instances like this, they'll hammer whoever they can just to be seen to be doing something, no matter how trival some of the incidents reported are. The people involved in any violence yesterday should definetely be punished though.

The holylands was an even bigger tip than usual this morning. The rubbish - glasses left on the street etc is shocking, even though some attempt at cleanup has been made.

Saw a few wingmirrorless cars.

its a tip this morning, went up it this morning at about 07:15 and there were a few twats running about with tins of beer and draped in a tri-colour still  pissed by the looks of things.

wonder will any of them be waking up shortly and thinking what did I do yesterday, and having flashbacks, or will them not give a f**k and look at it as normal behaviour?

Despite a previous post about heavy-handed policing I couldn't help thinking that police would have been a lot tougher if these were working class teenagers in West or East Belfast.
