Fermanagh also made the quarters in 2003. where we got the mother and father of all hammerings by a Cormac McAnallen inspired Tyrone. He never gave Steven Maguire a touch all day

Thanks for reminding me about that day ExiledGael. I've spent the last 4 years trying to forget about that one. Not a good day for Fermanagh football but it was a learning curve. :)
Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth

we are blue... etc

Wasn't that game a double header with Laois-Armagh? Incredible performance by Tyrone and I remember wondering how we would ever cope with a team like that. Will never forget the fella I was sitting beside from Carrickmore, reckon I understood no more than 25% of what the divil said to me. I'm sure the poor unfortunate had the same complaint about me own flah ahccent.

Also you've missed Laois in that list - 2003, 2005, 2006:

Good work Dec.
From that, the teams with the best record in the 1/4 finals are thus:
1. Kerry 6/6
2. Cork 3/3
3. Derry 2/2

While the teams with the worst records are:
= 1. Westmeath 0/3
= 1. Laois 0/3
  3. Roscommon 0/2
Dublin (2/5) and Galway (1/4) have also lost 3 quarterfinals.

Monaghan enhance Ulster rule

By Martin Breheny
Thursday August 02 2007

ULSTER'S claim to be the top football province since the introduction of the 'back door' in 2001 has been further enhanced by Monaghan's arrival in this year's SFC quarter-finals for the first time.

It brings Ulster's representation to three as they join Tyrone and Derry in the last eight. It's the third time in seven seasons that Ulster have topped the quarter-final quota and brings to 19 their overall total from 56 places.

Ulster also lead the representation list in terms of individual counties, with six having reached the quarter-finals as opposed to four each for Connacht and Leinster and two for Munster. Ulster also have won the most All-Irelands under the new system.

A total of 16 counties have reached the quarter-finals since 2001 with Kerry ever-present, followed by Dublin whose only miss was in 2003 when they lost a Leinster quarter-final to Westmeath and a qualifier to Armagh. Tyrone and Armagh have qualified five times, followed by Galway, Cork and Mayo on four.

With a starting base of nine, Ulster were always likely to figure prominently in the quarter-final line-ups but it would have been expected to feature Down and Cavan, two of the traditional power-centres in the province.

In fact, the qualifying system looked ideal for counties like Down and Cavan but neither has embraced its opportunities so far. Astonishingly, Down have won two just of nine Qualifiers while Cavan have won three of 11.

While Ulster have every reason to be pleased with both their All-Ireland haul and quarter-final representation since 2001, Leinster will be unhappy on both fronts. No All-Ireland win, one All-Ireland final appearance and only four counties reaching the quarter-finals is a disappointing haul for the biggest province. Connacht, though, have seen four counties reach quarter-finals.

No - thats the second time in a couple of weeks to my recollection that he's written his article about something we were talking about here. When Bud's fundraiser is organised these bucks better have deep pockets.

And he couldn't even be bother to do a light research  ::) Laois beat the Dubs in 2003, in a Leinster Semi-Final if I recall correctly...
