Would you welcome a border poll across the 32 counties, even if it was just to calibrate the speed towards a united Ireland?

Not yet,  a poll now is not going to get the numbers needed to really push it on. Have one after the 2031 census,  different story then.

Why all 32 counties? Only the 6 gets a vote as per the GFA.

From the GFA

"recognise that it is for the people of the island of Ireland alone, by
agreement between the two parts respectively and without external
impediment, to exercise their right of self-determination on the basis of
consent, freely and concurrently given, North and South, to bring about a
united Ireland, if that is their wish, accepting that this right must be
achieved and exercised with and subject to the agreement and consent of a
majority of the people of Northern Ireland;"

How do you propose that the Southern consent is concurrently given?

That was the GFA itself.

The 26 has articles 2 and 3. The constitution is clear on reunification being a policy goal. That is our consent.

The last line of your quote is the key bit. No mention of the 26c.

Think it through. The GFA is clear that the people of the 6 and only them get to decide. What would happen if the 6 voted for reunification and the 26 didn't? Unlikely but a possible outcome.

Was sure that Articles 2 and 3 of the Irish Constitution were changed for the GFA and that reunification would require a referendum on both sides of the border.

Possible, yes , but I wonder what percentage of  people in Britain would vote to get rid of  the North?

I'd imagine it would be  fairly high

I'd say you're right- majority probably don't really care and would aay leave it up to themselves, if you gave them the figures for keeping this kip running they'd be delighted to hand it over

The legalistic argument is we were in 1998 and agreed that if the north votes for reunification, reunification they get.

Twice prior to that we voted in constitutions that explicitly called for reunification.

ARTICLE 1

The Irish nation hereby affirms its inalienable, indefeasible, and sovereign right to choose its own form of Government, to determine its relations with other nations, and to develop its life, political, economic and cultural, in accordance with its own genius and traditions.

ARTICLE 2

It is the entitlement and birthright of every person born in the island of Ireland, which includes its islands and seas, to be part of the Irish Nation. That is also the entitlement of all persons otherwise qualified in accordance with law to be citizens of Ireland. Furthermore, the Irish nation cherishes its special affinity with people of Irish ancestry living abroad who share its cultural identity and heritage.

ARTICLE 3

1 It is the firm will of the Irish nation, in harmony and friendship, to unite all the people who share the territory of the island of Ireland, in all the diversity of their identities and traditions, recognising that a united Ireland shall be brought about only by peaceful means with the consent of a majority of the people, democratically expressed, in both jurisdictions in the island. Until then, the laws enacted by the Parliament established by this Constitution shall have the like area and extent of application as the laws enacted by the Parliament that existed immediately before the coming into operation of this Constitution.
