Plenty of 'good' ref's have problems with their calls every night according to the experts around the ground, there are also plenty of fit over 50's ( ;) ) that could continue to ref at intercounty level, but that is not the reason why the cut off is at 50, do you know the reason for that?

Look according to many within county boards and Croke Park level, funding of such things would not be on high on their wish list, getting bogged down on one call that wasn't as obvious from watching on the telly to pitch side is a bit much..

I'm trusting my umpires over the linesmen and 4th officials, at this level your linesmen are hoping ya make a f**k up so they are in next week  ;D  ;D

what is the reason?

Its to ensure that newer ref's are able to progress and get opportunities as the older ref's, who may have been very good, retire.. they can still and do continue to ref at their own counties. It's not about their ability fitness wise or there cognitive decline ;D

The amount of GAA people on here and we've 1 x ref in total, surely that says an awful lot

There's significantly more than one.

Define significantly more? MR2 and 1 based in the UK.
All I see is folk lambasting refs at every turn about, poser, cnut, twat, p***k, Dublin this, Dublin that etc etc etc

For me it's a case of the speed of the game and so many rules making it an incredibly hard game to ref. Is there a county about that doesn't have a shortage of refs? The abuse on here is ridiculous at times and goes completely unchecked

I know of another 5 who are posters and you can be sure there are more who at least follow.

Refereeing is an exceptionally difficult job not made any easier by the continuous changing of the rules. I would argue that there are far too many rules.

So they're reading the unabated vitriol green lit by the forum, confirming one of my points.

I have been knonw to let out the old Oh FFS ref how did you not see thats a foul" at games. Wouldnt make it personal. I go home thinking the ref got 10 decisions wrong. Watch on TV and realise he actually got 9 of them right. Its a tough old job

Who doesn't have a moan about a call or non call in a game? All natural, as we have passion for club or county in games when things are going our way or against us..

I've certainly mellowed over the years from player/manager to supporter and now ref, as a ref watching your club (when ya can) I'd be less critical (outwardly lol) towards a ref but I know the ref is doing his best to have a good game and there may be times that something is missed..

How I'd react if I went back into management might be slightly different mind you, but I'd be mindful on how I'd react so as not to get on the wrong side of things..

Retention, and I've said this before is very poor, there are more ex referee's fit and able about than there are current referee's.. The expenses is not a reason for referee's not staying at it, a few games where people question your parentage and your eye sight and club you are from.. Who's needs the hassle?

Ref assaulted [bust lip] in Clare due to go again this evening.

Team mentors had formed a barrier round him apparently. Utter madness . Hope they get a prosecution
