A former junior minister has called for a meeting of Fianna Fáil TDs and Senators to discuss the rumblings over the Taoiseach's leadership.

Earlier, Enterprise Minister Batt O'Keeffe admitted the party needed to be reassured.

In an interview on RTÉ's News at One, former junior minister Tom Kitt says the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party needs to meet to consider the ongoing controversy.

Looks like it's finally gathering some momentum.

I cannot see Micheal Martin leading FF.
i don't think brian lenihan can take the job for health reasons (although i note the indo are trying to push him into it, because aenghus thinks he has a special relationship there), so apart from dermot ahern, what alternatives are there?

Dermot Ahern and Mary Hanafin would be the other candidates.
Jackie Healy Rae and Michael Lowry have released a statement saying they won't support any new FF leader - there will have to be a General Election if FF get rid of Cowen (thank God!).

You can expect a leadership battle so if Lenihan can't take it on.

I don't think it would be a good idea to have another failed Finance Minister leading the party though. If Kenny gets the Taoiseach's job it would make the leader of the opposition an easy target.

Changing leaders now is equivalent to the search for a new Mayo manager- it will generate a lot of heat but is of no relevance. There is nobody in FF who can bring the banks back to life or stop the fall in house prices just as there is nobody in Mayo who can win an all-Ireland in the next 2 years, the same timeframe required.

At least O'Mahony had the decency to fall on his sword and step down for the good of the county.
I don't suppose we can expect Cowen to do the same for the good of the country....

The difference is that a new Government wouldn't be trying to cover their own mistakes and will be a lot less conected to the bankers, builder, and appointees that have fecked the Country.

It's almost certain a heave would result, ultimately, in a General Election.

The FF backbenchers, in general a bunch of goons, will hardly do this as 'turkeys voting for Christmas' come to mind.

Many of them are likely to get wiped out in an election but they can do as much as possible on their terms by forcing the issue and go into an election claiming to be outside the FF tent or wait and let the public do it.

All they are doing is driving up the cost of borrowing the €20bn per annum or so that FF freakonomics has left the country without. Ireland has lost sovereignty in the area of repairing the damage of the financial crisis so it doesn't matter whether or not  FF backbenchers are happy with Cowen. Whoever is Taoiseach takes orders from the EU.

Their failure to hold the by elections in order to hide from the electorlate has got them into this mess. It's the failure of the FF leadership and Finance Ministers past and present that are driving up the cost of borrowing.

If they had have held the elections and made a quick and easy transfer of power to a leader with a mandate and a clean record (FF or otherwise) with no skeletons to hide the cost of borrowing wouldn't be soaring. This didn't happen today or last week when Cowen was up partying all night this has been brewing for years.

You'd be suprised how good bankers and builders are at making friends Zap.
