8 week ban for Morgan O'Flaherty and a 4 week ban for Johnny Doyle after Sunday's scrap in Portlaoise. The four Laois players got 4 week bans too but due to one of the many wonderful anomalies in the GAA disciplinary system, they will only miss one NFL game, whereas JD will miss two because our second match with Tipperary is on the Saturday and Laois' match with Donegal is on the Sunday.

When are they going to bring in match suspensions instead of banning people for a specific number of weeks? The pointless token bans given to Denis Bastic and Ciarán Whelan after last year's quarter final with Kerry are another example of this baffling aspect of the GAA disciplinary system.

Sorry if this has been mentioned but why did Fennell come on for the dubs if he hasn't played club football in over a year? How could management put confidence in a that player?

Kildare manager Kieran McGeeney has dropped star forward Alan Smith from his panel.

Nominated for an All-Star award last year after scoring 4-9 in the Lilywhites' run to the All-Ireland quarter-final, the lethal corner forward has been axed after suffering an early season injury. The Sarsfields clubman has been unable to play in the O'Byrne Cup after injuring his back during a weights session and the Kildare backroom team decided it was best to remove him from the panel at this time..

Smith first came to prominence in Kildare's march to the 2008 All-Ireland under 21 final which they lost to Kerry. It remains to be seen if he will return to the fold later in the season.

Alan's head is all over the place as he has some personal issues hanging over him, no point in discussing them here but hopefully he'll get head straight as I don't think we can replace him.

No surprise really. Good decision to allow him get himself sorted out. He'll be long back on the panel before the summer.

Our first two league outings look quite daunting now without JD and Smith though. Kavanagh has to be doubtful enough as well given that he hasn't featured yet so far. Rob Kelly has been taking a lot of the slack on the scoring front. Hopefully that can continue. Paudie O'Neill and Roli need to be chipping in on the scoreboard more often now starting this weekend. David Whyte will be putting them both under pressure for their starting positions this year. Keith Cribbin has shown some promise but he is far from the finished article. He'll be an excellent player when he fills out a bit.

Poor enough fare, Kildare looked like they could move up the gears, didn't and then died an awful death. Louth got the goal that was always going to win it at that stage. Big problems at full back.

Tame enough stuff compared to last Sunday. Big problems at full-back alright Dinny. We don't look in good shape there and we'll be in trouble next Sunday if Benny Coulter gets that kind of space. Whether they'll persist with Chalky is anyones guess. I'd have Kevin O'Neill back in or even Hughie McGrillen but I don't know whether he was back today for DCU. Lyons could be another option but he looked miles off the pace when introduced.

The forwards were very static and one-paced. We badly miss JD, Smith and Leper to add a bit of pace. It was heartening to see Jimmers introduced though. Karl Ennis looked sharp enough but he has definitely lost the pace that marked him out a few years ago. Ronan Walsh in the full-forward line I can't understand. Surely there's better corner-forwards than him in the county (O'Sullivan, Smullen). Cribbin showed one or two nice touches but was bullied out of it too often. Paudie O'Neill was poor and Roli was terrible when he came on. The lack of options in the forwards at the moment is worrying.

McCormack will have nightmares about the goal. Keeper position is also becoming a bit of an issue because Corley has never looked entirely convincing there either. There's no point in overreacting to an O'Byrne Cup game (DCU hammered us this time last year), but we'll have to improve an awful lot to get something against Down next weekend.

The O'Byrne Cup/Shield finally ended today!
Pretty strange Shield final between Carlow and Wexford, where 5 mins from HT Wexford led 2-7 to 0-3. And Carlow ended up winning 1-15 to 2-8 !!

It was a very much reserve Carlow side and we really don't have much as back up, but they are doing all the training so deserved a run. Some were badly shown up in 1st half. Wexford dominated at midfield with Brendan Doyle having a stormer and Deely and Ben Brosnan who looks a class act causing all sorts of trouble.

But at ht we brought on four of our better players, and the game transformed completely.Carlow won 2nd half 1-10 to a point, despite playing with 14 for most of 2nd half. Great comeback, and quality scores taken.
But a costly one for the league as a straight red for our main freetaker, and a bad injury to Simon Rea who is our best forward puts them out of Wicklow game next week.

Nice to win a trophy (well shield in this case) as any kind of tournament win is extremely rare for us!
