Last year We were away for first game, got home advantage for second game and the U21 team were beaten by Wicklow

Good crowd in Newbridge today for the season opener. Great to have some football to look forward to after the cold snap.

Bit of a mixed bag from Kildare. Started very well and had six points on the board before UCD got their first score. The match should have been over at HT though and the goal we gave away was very sloppy. Corley should have been far more decisive. Dermot's second yellow after HT was harsh enough IMO. O'Loughlin was acting the maggot and it only seemed to be a bit of handbags between the two of them. Not the kind of incident that would've warranted a caution in previous years but times change I suppose. Good to see the team tough it out with 14 men for most of the second half.

Referee was far too whistle happy. Didn't let the game flow at all and the free-count must have been very high. The jury is out on the new rules. I thought the mark worked well but the handpass rule will probably have to be looked at. Very inconsistently applied by today's official to the fustration of everyone.

Rob Kelly, Keith Cribbin and David Whyte all showed that they're capable of pushing for a starting place in the half-forwards. Willie Heff showed well but I doubt he'll start on the edge of the square come the summer. Mac still too ill-disciplined in his tackling and he'll have to stop giving away silly frees if he's to start later on in the year. Chalky at full-back will be an interesting experiment over the next few weeks but he ended up playing most of his football out the field today. Laois up next - always a good tussle against the neighbours!
