Some of the players you guys are mentioning are good players no doubt but top class...Dunno.

For me top class forwards are players like

C Cooper
Pete the great
S O Neil
O McConville
SMcDonnell
B Brogan (Possibly)
M Murphy
B Coulter (Possibly)

A lot of players you've discounted are as good and indeed better than many you've named.

I don't think Kevin Walsh is all that keen on Shane Walsh as he seems more on the bench than starting games.

I wouldn't say that now, Shane broke his wrist last summer so his championship involvement was curtailed by that and he spent the winter getting over a knee injury/operation which ruled him out of most of the FBD. If anything I'd say Kevin is wary of rushing him back to ensure he's right for championship this year.

Even before the tragedy he was spending plenty of time watching from the bench.

I thought I seen where you were coming from reading through that list, i.e. Players that have performed on the big day and won Sam(although many players aren't as fortunate to have as many great players around them). But then I got to Coulter. Not that he isn't a quality player, but I wouldn't say any better than many other players mentioned in this thread, and doesn't have the medals to elevate himself above them either. For example I wouldn't dream of swapping McManus for him, and in fact he has a better medal haul if we were to go down that route.

You could add a few like Declan Browne and Matty Ford to that list; Two men who stood out even with lesser quality team mates.

I suppose a lot of it comes down to stuff they've won, or profile. Lads like Niall McNamee wouldn't have a chance of matching some of those lads for medals, but I guarantee you if you put him into th e forward lines they played in, he'd be seen as top class.

Yes i agree 100%...them men listed above was only my thinking of who a great forward is/was. Coulter was mentioned and prob should not be on the list as schkite said but it's only my opinion and def think Niall McNamee, M Forde, D Browne were great players but we'll never know what they'd have been like in an All Ireland semi or final under pressure with the country's best defenders hanging out of them...the guys mentioned above have done it and got the T shirt (Except Coulter...sort off but did play in an All Ireland final)

Top class forwards, not top class teams. Teams should never come into this conversation.

I agree with your point, but I think Mattie Forde showed enough of himself to be considered in that level.

Browne and McNamee were/are clearly talented players but there will always be that uncertainty about them through no fault of their own.

Kuwabatake Sanjuro

Johnny Doyle deserves a mention too, maybe never matched the single game heights that Matty Forde did on occasion but his scoring consistency for over a decade was incredible. Great leader and role model for any aspiring inter-county footballer too.
